My 23 yr old gelding has lost 100kgs in a short space of time. i weighed him at the beginning of july, and about 2 weeks ago i noticed he had started to drop weight, i upped his feed and started feeding calm and condition. i had the vet out for blood test today and they all came back fine (i need to have a chat with the vet again as she left me a message) she asked me to weight tape him again (we know this isn't an accurate measure but it gives us an idea) and he is 100kgs lighter than the beginning of july.
he is currently out 24/7 with fairly decent grass (been in a couple of nights when the weather has been absolutely foul) he gets 2 sections of haylage, 2 feeds a day consisting of 1/2 a scoop of calm and condition, 1/2 a scoop of hifi senior, 1 scoop of pink powder and 2 pumps of soya oil, same day and night. he also gets 1/2 scoop of bog standard nuts scattered round the field to keep him occupied.
he seems to be losing weight rather than gaining it, so i am at a lose of what to try, he doesn't like big meals and tends to leave it if there is too much. also when he came in he only ate half his haylage (which he would normally lick of the floor to savor every scrap!) so any ideas greatly appreciated. obviously i am going to chat with my vet a sort out a proper feeding plan but any ideas i can take with me would be great.
oh just to add he was worm counted in the beginning of july and that came back 0 and he has had his teeth done at the beginning of june. i have stopped working him but he was in light work up until friday which consisted of short hacks or a short schooling sessions, no more than an hour max and mostly walk and trot.
