So the horses had to stay in all last week, we cant use the outdoor school coz its like a bog and on concrete, so not even safe! We arent allowed to lunge, loose school, turn out in the indoor school, so the only option I have is ride Arch (a very fit 6 year old!) EVERY single night for at least an hour! THEN, yesterday Im told the horses will have to stay in this week aswell as more rain is forecast, so I asked if we could lunge indoors just while the outdoor in like a bog and I was told no! Arch is just about ready to explode and I really dont fancy being on him when he does, but without even being able to lunge, Im having to take the risk.
Its getting silly now, there is not leniancy (sp) and the weather was really nice over the weekend and its not bad today either! I couldnt even ride in the indoor school yesterday, coz there was some stupid dog show in there all day, so its gonna be great fun riding tonight!!

Sorry for the rant, but Im so fed up and Arch is getting bolshy and hes not a bolshy horse at all. The YO is just not being reasonable about this.

I have exactely the same problem except that the idoor school is only available to ride in between 5pm and 6pm each evening. Makes life a bit of a rush.
Otto is definitely becomming a grump having to stay in but atleast yesterday should have got rid of some of his energy for a day or 2 (I hope)

Such a shame that YO's don't use their heads, and sacrifice a field for turnout even if it's only for a couple of hours for each horse.

I just couldn't keep my horse in the way you describe - and think that your YO's are bordering on cruel.

Land recovers - so do schools............

I no, but the supid thing about it is that the indoor surface is SO compact it will enver move anyway! AND theyt let the kids in there with the go karts!!!

I really dont want to have to move Arch, but Ive got a feeling Im gonna have to start looking!

That is just madness! I am lucky and rent my own land so can trash what I like...but my horse is out every day for 12 hours and yes he makes a right mess...mud everywhere and hoof churn marks, divets the lot...but a harrow in the spring gets rid of the worse of it and then recover it for a couple of months in the summer and it is as good as new! I have never understood this practice of keeping horses in 24/7 on yards to save the land from being a bit mucked up. I feel for you in this position because my boy would have exploded by now given these circumstances.

I've got a new forest - he is out 24/7 on his own, but he is tending to stay with his haynet in the field shelter as its dry in there. I'm bringing him in from Fri-Sun in order to dry his feet out. He was fine Sat morning when I rode round the fields - got told off by the farmers dad. So Sun took him for a ride up the road track on the farm and teh pony turned into the devil. Had to move out of the way of the pick up coming down so stood at the edge of the field about 2ft above the road. After it had gone past asked the pony to step down at which point he lanched himself off and put a buck in mid air. The walking back he started stopping and trying to spin to the left, then doing little rears and little bucks. Then decided to put his head down and cantered on the road doing 1ft bronks.

Ahhh I'm supposed to be selling this pony in March and he is currently getting so aggitated even through he is out he is not able to run off the excess energy.

Ours are still out from 8am - 3pm. But the field is 1/4 mud now and no grass so he is in a MAJOR mood when he comes in - especially as Sharer never gives him enough haylege (I can jam 2 nets full so that he still has 1/3 of haylege left when I go up @6pm. Its always empty plus floor hoovered when she goes up and I htink he has been eating his Bedmax!!)

Thankfully we can still ride outside. I think I would go mad if we had the rain you guys are having. I really do feel for you all

, and the horses.

Yea ok that sucks.

We have zero winter turnout unless you want to put them out in what is literally a bog... but we are allowed to turnout in one of the indoor arenas, we can lunge them and we do have a horse walker.

Dont envy your situation much :*(

Ours have had had 3 hours turnout since last week as well, so you have my sympathies.
It sucks, not sure when ours will be allowed in the fields either. We've got an outdoor to use, but it's flooded

Chloe seems quite happy about it, but is coming out of her stable stiff.
Meg (my 6 year old) was doing the 'wall of death' on the lunge yesterday morning, and going the fastest I've seen her, so I feel for you not even being able to lunge and let him get rid of some energy that way.
I'm going for a hack round the roads on mine later. I was going to lunge again this morning, but it was raining too much

Think I might be in the same boat as you soon, YO's husband was moaning about the state of the fields yesterday

, but at the end of the day what can we do, we have no indoor school and the outdoor is not doing very well with this weather, I have four horses, three of which I can ride other one is retired 17.2 gelding who really would prefer to be out for atleast an hour a day to stretch his leags....... I wouldn't mind, but we have to pay £2 for half hour of light in the school, so going to cost me £6 or £8 a time and the school is not maintained very well.......... Well that's my moan over, hope you sort your situation out............

It must be a kick in the teeth to see kids on go-karts in the indoor school..surely one of the benefits of having an indoor school is to use it when the weather is bad...amazing how 'precious' it suddenly becomes when it needs to be used.

Luckily my YO rotates fields...we have fields for summer and fields for winter (winter ones being mostly chalky)...and a couple spare either way. Also, they dont seem to get very boggy as only 1 or 2 horses got out in each field and the ground stays very good.

It must be annoying and frustrating to have such constrictions placed on you when you cant control or change the weather.

As I've said many times on here before, ours are in all winter, however we do have an indoor school to ride and lunge in. We aren't supposed to loose school, but that is because most of the idiots at my yard have no idea what 'loose schooling' is and just turn their horse out in it to dig holes and roll.
Can you not have a serious word with your YO and explain that your horse is full of himself and becoming difficult to handle and ride. Obviously agreeing that there is nothing that YO can do about the weather but that your horse needs more exercise than normal, not less! Maybe she might let you lunge before you ride?

the horses are in at the moment because the fields are flooded and on a bit of a slope so it is for safety rather than state of the fields. We are lucky in that we have a horse walked and the YO puts them on there twice aday and trys to hand graze them all for 15mins. Also our school is holding up brilliantly and we are allowed to lunge in it. it's not perfect, but it's not too bad.

moonwalker you sound like a place i used to be at, a competition venue with 2 indoor and umpteen outdoor schools but we were the last in the line to use them after various horse shows, dog training classes, motorbike scrambling thingies and the like. what really used to make me mad is the people coming for shows who would execrcise nd lunge in the fields we werent even allowed to set foot in!

Mine can go out - I've got the use of two paddocks so when the weather gets better I'll put them in together (they are out separately at the mo) and pop some grass seed down. It will also be harrowed and if I rotate them in the spring I'm sure I'll get some grass back ok. It must be really annoying not being able to turn out - I don't know how i'd cope

Stuff like this makes you grateful for 24/7 turnout
100 acres for thirty horses and unlimited use of an outdoor school.
The joys of Cornwall, but it does rain alot and the wind!!!!
They're tuff down here the pasty miners
Moved from Hampshire 3 yrs ago and don't miss the hassles.
Best of luck for the rest of the winter guys.
