Im lucky enough to be setting up my own yard as we've bought a house with land and afew barns. Im trying to think of afew yard names but i haven't come up with anything good at the moment, its going to be a small yard on a small farm. Just wondering if you have any ideas? :)

you can use the name of my yard if you like (seeing as we are about 2000 miles away from you,)............'Nags End'. It may be more apt to my yard as I take on only retired horses due to age or injury but you are welcome to use it if you like it:)

I'd go with the name of the house or the village, when people refer to livery yards I can usually tell where it is by the name if its geographical and - much harder to pin point a yard with a different sort of name and when people are considering a yard the first thought is probably where is it located

What about the geography of your yard, i.e. is it low down (i.e. valley) or high up??? Are there any local names for say trees, dells, valleys, becks/brooks, etc etc. What about flora and fauna (but for pitys sake don't call it "Ragwort Vale" yard or anything:)).

What can you see from the yard? i.e. can you see a hill? Woods? stone walls? hedges? Any birds? ie. Larks? Buzzards? Robins? Blackbirds?

I'd ask around the area and see if there are any old names come up; you'd be amazed at what you'll find. For example, looking through our old documents about our house and surrounds we found a reference to "Castle" field, and locally, reference to a "Ridgeway" - dunno what all that was about, perhaps goes back to Roman occupation??? Who knows. But worth an ask around, especially the old folks who'll freely tell you the history of the area, especially, IME, if you, er, "lubricate" their vocal chords suitably!!!:)

Mine doesn't have a name.

The house doesn't even have a name, it is just referred to by the house number, the Vet calls it "The old Patterson Place" the hayman calls it "The Johnson Place" after past owners. The Pattersons haven't lived here for 30 years!

If any one is referred and most people come via word of mouth it is just "Whatsernames Place down the road a bit, y'know, the one on the corner of 6th and North"

:)

As for naming a yard I would just go by the name of the Farm/Village or Road if I were to do it. :)

My old yard was named after the YO's heart horse who had died about 5 years prior to me meeting her. It was her show name, which sounded lovely. In my head if I had my own yard I would be naming it after my last horse - his registered name was Khalswitz, (my username), and I think Khalswitz Stables has a ring to it ;). I think it's nice if a name is perosnal - either through farm name/town name/history of the place or through yourself!
