I’m certain I’m being dim, but google isn’t being my friend here.

Giving Best Turned Out a go at very local level and have been gleaning tips, but I just don’t understand the hat ribbons thing. I keep seeing “sew up hat ribbons” but what does this really mean?

Should you just be able to see the ‘bow’ part and no tails at all? Do you fold them and sew them so they don’t hang below the bottom of the hat?

If anyone can explain or has a picture I would be so grateful!

Thank you!

Some people snip them off but I’ve found the ribbon frays if you do that. It comes from hunting Masters and Hunt Staff have ribbons hanging down, everyone else should have ribbons up, stitched under or tucked up. The reason being that hunt staff and masters are the only mounted followers you need to be able to recognise from behind

I used to sew the tails up to so they were underneath the bow, like this (excuse my bad drawing!). You should have the bottom touching the rim of the hat
