Rode my new mare again today for the 2nd time

she was very good/calm but kept shaking her head up and down literally nearly all the time while being ridden then as soon as i got off she stopped.

She seems fine in herself, not many flies about today either

The only difference today was she had a running martingale on but i cant see that that is making any difference!

does she normally wear one tho?? mine hated wearing one and threw her head all over the place, even tho it wasn't tight. could it be the problem?

Could it be her back? Sound a bit like head tossing, which i understand is related to a sore back, plus it would make sense as is stopped when you got off.

Agree, I would take the martingale off and see.

Are you riding her in a different bit to her previous owners?

Try lungeing her and see if she does it, this way you can more easily see what is going on.

Although back trouble might still show on the lunge, teeth trouble or bit discomfort will defintely show, look for lots of movement in the mouth, tongue poking out, over the bit etc.

Did you buy her a new saddle? This could also be the problem, if it is pinching.

Good luck
