I am thinking about getting an energiser to keep horsey in the sectioned off bit of paddock. At the mo I have made a feeble attempt of short posts and non-electrified tape, he has of course got wise (although shutting himself off from water drinker and not so wise going back)! The sides are secure so it is purely to stop him looking like he's in foal and save grass for winter. He is on the whole thing currently so he can get to water! Field is about 200m across but I guess it would need to do 600m if I put him in a middle section...

So I saw this solar one that seems a lot cheaper than others I have seen?

Solar powered sounds good as I don't really want to cart car batteries back to my flat etc! I assume it will be OK in winter, it only needs to do about 200m at the moment, maybe 600 if I want to move him into a middle section?

Is this a really low power or something?

Do I need to buy anything other than this thing (and tape and taller posts), I don't quite understand if I need a battery as well and if so what kind (sorry this is a dumb question)?
 
I hope so! He won't be jumping over it once I have tall posts unless he has secret jumping skills I am yet to witness! We think he just stepped over the little ones :-)

I just figured I should probably invest in actual power and wouldn't mind running a bit along the fence to discourage him from cribbing on the rails (I don't mind the posts so much) and perhaps zap the pesky bum rubber on the other side!
 
From memory, I think this brand are from the USA, they tend to have solar panels which are more efficient in the levels of sunshine found in the US rather than the dreary UK. Also, usual applies, with how do they provide backup etc when they go wrong? I would suggest for the small length of fencing you wish to power, a Hotline or Rutland energiser of around 0.4 to 0.6 joules power output, which will give you some leeway if you expand, the best solar option, is to have a 12 volt battery and a seperated panel, but this increases the cost. The small solar fencers such as the one you show tend to be low joule output, but high volts, which is fine until you get undergrowth or dry soil, rugged horses etc.Then they are not powerful enough. I will have a look and see if there is a specific model I would recommend for you later and PM you.

You can get small energisers that run off little batteries, from memory Gemini is one that springs to mind, I have a good one that runs off D sized batteries ok, I think it's a Fenceman one

Both are under £100 I think

I'd get one of those over this one, sorry to sound cynical but if these really worked well they would be more popular
