Posted a while ago as looking for a second horse - nothing special, just a happy hacker but only got 1k to spare, max. Well there is a horse that has turned up for some grass, and its for sale, he is really underweight, a TB, 11 years old, pelvis looks a bit out (but got a good backman) but has 3 wonderful floaty paces. Seems a real people horse and I am told he is good in all ways. Well i shall see him being ridden tomorrow and if he is good....might buy him for my neice so we can hack to gether at last....BUT i wanted a cob, easy to do, not a TB who looks like he's had a hard life - trouble is, he will be really cheap.....advice please??!?xxxx Pimms and lemonade, with extra ice as its so hot!

agree with above - go to see him but put yur sensible hat on - its hard but so is ending up with a problem horse who will drain your nieces confidence - good luck xxx

Easier said than done! I just bought a heart horse - went out for a cob came back with an ISH type and the history wasn't anywhere near correct! I have a feeling you are already smitten - enjoy whatever you decide x

Hmm this is a hard one.

When I got my TBxID i had not long had my piebald cob pts I was already looking for a second horse when he was pts and I was looking for what I ended up with but when my cob was pts I wanted another piebald cob and nothing else but my mum didnt want me to have another cob so I went all over looking at horses that i had no interest in before i even got there! then we went to see mojo and as he came across the field I liked him and he had a bit about him (he was grumpy!) so rode him and all the rest of it said great i love him can we arrange a vetting the women said no dont have him vetted have him on a month trial instead. my mums head told her dont touch it my heart said i want him so a months trial it was! he came to us he lost the plot i couldnt tie him up he was a nightmare to ride we couldnt catch him my mum was still just saying send him back I wasnt having any of it i still wanted him then after we had had him 2 weeks he's owner was on the phone im in your area can i come to pick my money up. So after a chat we said we would have him and she came to pick her money up. Then everything went wrong!! we had the vet nearly everyday he was like a self harmer anything he could cut himself on he would then I decided I didnt want him and just wanted him gone I wanted a dearler to come and get him because he wasnt a piebald cob and he was a nutter!! then i wanted to keep him and he turned out to be a lovely horse and i owned him for 8 years and was unfortunately pts last month due to colic.

So make from this what you will.....

I think if it wasnt for losing my cob my head and heart would of said no dont be stupid and I wouldnt of had of had him but I just got bored of going round looking at boring browns that I didnt like when i saw him with he's quirky ways I just thought why not? and although i would always moan in a joking way about him not being piebald and being bay or boring brown! I did love him and it was the best thing for him and me to keep him.

I think if its meant to be it will be but if not something will happen to put you off him. My mum always says you dont pick animals they pick you!

Yes, this is a tough one.
I always thought when I start looking I wanted an Irish type, about 15hh, and a Gelding. Now though, I have fallen for a WB type, 16hh and a MARE!! I always said I would never have a mare as I always seemed to get on better with Geldings!!
Horlicks is exactly what I want, without even knowing it!! She is grumpy and can be mareish, but it really doesn't bother me!!

Can you not have him on trial as he is at your yard already? What does your niece think?

I think you should go for safety first. If he is quiet to ride and is good on the ground and has no health issues then I would certainly seriously think about it. You could get a cob with a multitude of issues. I think this could possibly be fate and he has landed on your doorstep for a reason.....maybe??? Good luck in what ever you decide x

Update - had a call to say they were going to ride him, so me and my neice went down, he wasnt very good with his feet (despite being fully shod) and I already have one on sedalin for the farrier so dont want another - anyway got him tacked up and took hhim to the sand school, my neice got on him, walk trot all fine, asked for canter and he turned into a bucking rearing loon!! She fell off the side, landed almost on her feet, and broke.......a nail!!
So my head is ruling this one and we have said no - I would have loved fattening him up, and mending his scars and gammy eyes and there may be a valid reason for what he did, but the hand of fate has decided, so the search goes on!!
