Well today I washed his legs down and his flanks, used shampoo but it did not have much effect, here are before and after pics... Any ideas on something decent to get the yellow stable stains off?
Shampoo didnt have much effect!!!!

I use vanish (as in the stuff for clothes) but be careful they dont have an allergic reaction to it - i test on a small patch first! Otherwise the gallop shampoo with an awful lot of elbow grease does eventually work...... or clip all the hair off

Do you know what - I wouldn't bother at the moment as you will be fighting a losing battle! I have a grey and am itching to get my lotions and potions out but really there is absolutely no point at the moment.
When the time comes - try some biological washing powder like DAZ - scrub it in with a water brush, leave for 1 min or even less and then wash out thoroughly - try test patch first though to check for alergic reaction - wash, dry and leave for 24 hours to check....

My horse is just the same, I got fed up and clipped it off, now its dirty there and theres nothing to clip off lol.

Daz worked wonders on my grey and coloured with white legs.

I make a weak solution up using hot water and biological washing gel and sponge off with it, then rinse well with cold water - nothing I've used this one has ever suffered an allergy, but probs worth a patch test first!
For tails I use a mix of bio laundry gel and Fairy (only on the hair and not the dock) and it gets even the worst yellow mares tail white!

I have to admit that with a sensitive skinned grey that just loves poo pillows I have to admit that I can't keep her sparkly clean through the winter!
Every couple of weeks her legs are washed (in cheapo baby shampoo and warm water), brushed gently with a dandy brush and then rinsed well in warm water. (they are religiously ignored inbetween as I don't wash off muddy legs). Then (while they are still damp) I wipe veg oil over them from the knee down. Then I put clean leg wraps on overnight in the stable so they dry out nicely. If she needs to be tidy then I can just brush them off when dry.
The rest of her gets daily grooms - keeping the oils brushed through the coat seems to really help stains not get fixed on. If we have a lesson and she has really grotty bits then I just wipe over with a damp sponge. The daily grooming really makes a big diff as the stains don't get such a hold and it fades out grubby bits well too without needing to wash all the time.
I won't use washing powder etc as she seems to have v sensitive skin, would hate for her to have a reaction to it! With the above she is still white coloured and no baths this winter, so far so good! (now I've said that I'm sure when I get to the yard she will have spent her turnout trying to prove me wrong!!).
