shampoo for feather mites

Shampoo won’t shift mites. clip the lot off and then Frontline x 4 weeks first, then Selsun or Malaseb.

Mites, cpl and M&S is a nightmare to deal with, there is no cure just painstaking management.

I have used lime sulphur shampoo from Easivet successfully, also Ivermectin liquid pipettes from my vet. I have not needed to clip yet in four years but the pony never goes near straw and is not allowed alfalfa, just a few soaked grass pellets and a balancer. I also keep the skin at the back of the knees well moisturised daily and use a nit comb to get rid of any dandruff flakes. I have no experience of CPL which I understand is a lot more severe though.

This was the treatment advised by my vet - it has been the only thing to stop the misery for my poor horse (and me wasting a ton of money on every treatment under the sun).
Clip feathers off (ideally) wash with Absorbine Silver Honey shampoo. When dry apply Cydectin pour on for cattle (on prescription from vet but you can get it online). Repeat after 10 days.
Repeat again after 6 months. If your horse is in a herd it is advisable to treat all the others too, especially all the feathered ones.

I second Cydectin. I didnt clip the feathers off mine. I washed thoroughly with a sebolytic shampoo such as Selsun Gold the day before. Then applied cydectin the next day. It's oil based so do it late in the day or stable. And wear gloves!

Selsun 2.5% shampoo works for my old boy. Scrub thoroughly on day 1, day 5 and day 10 to clear any hatchlings. Leave on for ten minutes, rinse well. Any dandruff patches with mites will stain yellow, but this will fade. Repeat if you see any further stamping or scratching. The mites live on the dead skin and dandruff. They do not burrow and do not feed on blood. Selenium clears both and kills mites, but is not effective against harvest mites.
