Shampoo recommendations

I use whatever baby/children's shampoo is the cheapest at the time. I won't buy expensive stuff marketed at horses because the bottle usually ends up trodden on (my fault for leaving them in the wrong place).

In years gone by it used to be Tesco own brand 50p a litre. Sadly no such thing still exists.

Whatever is on offer at the tack shop!! I do use washing up liquid sometimes on the legs, the blue one, as it’s really good for white socks! But not on the body and yes it can dry out the skin…but it’s good for an emergency wash

A colour coat enhancing horse shampoo I can’t remember which make for the coat, generally a human hair shampoo for the tail of a fairly cheap variety and baby no tears shampoo for his forelock in case it gets into his eyes. Has a nice shampoo he won as part of a goody bag which is supreme products prefect pamper. Lots of products 😁

Personally I would advise to avoid using stuff like "Fairy" which are detergents, as this will strip the coat of the necessarily oil, and may cause skin/sensitivity issues.

With my old boy - who had sweet itch - I used Head & Shoulders, which worked very well for him and soothed him a lot. I've continued using this on my current horse, particularly for her legs (she's got quite thick feathers).

Or Vosene is another thing I've used.

I actually like buying nice pony shampoo 😂
I know it’s way more expensive but Gold Label do a nice citronella one and barrier do a few cheap tea tree and something.
The pink Naf pimp my pony smells amazing 😍

I tried a new horse shampoo yesterday on AJ - a solid bar from Honest Riders. It comes with a little sisal bag and he loved having this rubbed on his skin. Results were impressive! It wasn’t cheap but apparently it lasts for ages.
I used cheap supermarket shampoo & conditioner (for manes & tails) at times but they can make the horses quite itchy- and although they are cheap, I get through loads.

I have to admit I like potions & lotions that smell nice!

Dear old Gallop horse shampoo, either the medicated or the conditioning one. Horses' skin has different pH to humans so don't use a non-equine shampoo on them, but then I don't use frequently so a bottle lasts ages.

PS our bottle of Gallop frequently finds its way into the human bathroom as it doesn't make the sensitive-skinned family members itch.

That’s interesting! I keep telling my daughter she should try some horsey things!
She has really sensitive skin.

I buy a massive container of dirty beastie and the same of wahls purple shampoo too… lasts for literally years… (when I was showing a coloured hairy cob it still lasted 2 seasons)
