Hello all!

Im just wondering if anyone has a Shar Pei? Just seeing what there tempermants like and any experiences. I know most of it comes down to the way you train them but im really thinking about getting one.

I currently have a westie x scotty - and we lost his mum late november. So now looking for something to keep him happy and for him to have a play friend! lol.

I only have experience of one. He was quite sweet but had so many health issues. He died young. Each to their own but I think your asking for problems with one of these.
 
He pretty much had everything, from bad skin, eye problems due to folds of skin, dodgy guts and died form twisted gut. I'm a veterinary nurse and he was in almost every week, i think he was about 7 when he died.

Sorry!! I'm sure there must be healthy ones out there but poor Max had a tough time and he was so loved by his owners.
 
IMO,they are walking vets bills.
Obviously all breeds have issues,but there are just so may with SP's that I wouldnt touch one.

Also remember that a SP is what,19/20 inchs tall? That might be a little too big for you'r lad to play with comftably.
 
I agree with the others, they are a walking vet bill, I actually feel more sorry for this breed than any other, they have terrible skin folds causing sores and sweaty smelling foulness, they shakes saliva everywhere usually due to bad ears, u can barely see into their ear canal.....they have horrendous eye issues as they are usually partially covered by their skin folds, they scratch itch like mad, commonly suffer oedema in the legs due to all the baggy sagging skin and folds.....I think they should actually be a banned breed.....I have seen a few with hardly any wrinkles and they look rather smart, prob how they where origionally meant to be.
Like akita they give very lttle arning if they do have aggression issues, poss due to the amount of wrinkles they have weighing down their lips, makes it hard to see if they are curling them up.
I have comes across aggressive one, they dont mess about in this department if they are aggressive, but I have also met some ok ones, a gentleman near me has 2 very well trained and well mannered ones.

Have you all owned one then? Ive also heard that bull dogs are pron to be ill quite a lot aswell! xx
 
Had one crossed with a rotti (rescue dog ) lovely dog but became far too protective of my children -eventually biting a policeman and having to be PTS .
 
Shar pei's were bred for generations as fighting dogs, one of the main purposes of that wrinkled extra skin is to be able to slip out of an opponent dog's grasp and or turn while still held. As Cayla said they suffer terribly with skin complaints etc. I would say they are best for an experienced dog owner really.
 
Aww! So any other breeds you would recommend? I dont want a Jack Russell or something smaller then my boy. But I dont want something massive. We used to have Rotties and collie alsatians before they passed and the whole family ended up with scotties and wesites. Partly our fault as my dogs mum had the puppies and my sister has the wesite (Dad) lol so just want a different breed now. I wouldnt mind getting another Scottie, but just looking into different breeds lol. Thats all

i thought about getting a Shar Pei, looked into the breed in detail, and discarded the idea because of the reasons above. there is a Shar Pei rescue, btw.
i feel very sorry for these dogs. i've seen one minimally-wrinkled one (wrinkles around ankles and neck only) and that had come from China, and was apparently the way they are supposed to be. that one looked very athletic and healthy.
 
Haha - Yeah ive seen some and they dont look that wrinkly! Did u end up getting a dog in the end? What breed if you did? The thing is, is that we have a lot of children in our family (neices etc) So its got to be a breed that has good manners (although that comes down to training etc) but it also helps with types etc x
 
Unfortunately, shar pei's have in recent years been bred purely for aesthetic value, disregarding the health complications that a short muzzled, excessively wrinkled head can bring. Personally I would get a whippet! You have a terrier cross which i am assuming is playful, energetic and tough as old boots! Whippets can give as good as they get and more and if all else fails they can leg it!
 
Haha yeah deffo! Mine is soo playful, when my uncle brings his jack russell round to my house my dog (called bear) always plays with him - a bit too playfull to be honest because the Jack russell always gets anoyed at him! Most of them get anoyed at him because hes too playful. But then since my dog died (Bears mum) bear has gone so silly and really protective. Like if anyone comes near me and bears sitting on me he'll gorwl at them - which leads to bear being told off and getting told to go to bed or something. Its hard, Im considering having him done, one because if i end up getting a bitch i dont want them to have pups! and because I dont want him to get testical cancer or w.e im going to put another post on here about it lol x
 
Well I would get him done before you introduce another dog to the household and do what you can to cure his naughty behaviour. Another dog will quickly learn if Bear is taking the mick out of you!
 
Yeah, im not in a hurry to get another dog. Im just considering it. I want to get bear done anyways. But I want his growling to stop lol. Plus if i do get a pup I dont want him learning things off bear lol. I put another post on. xx
 
My ex boyfriend's mother used to breed Shar Pei's and had a few older bitches at home plus the stud dog. They always had crusty, weepy looking eyes but all had lovely, quiet temperaments around the house. However, the stud, who was a beautiful and very loving dog, one day attacked a mini Yorkie and killed it outright :-( Needless to say he was PTS immediately after.
