I am in the very lucky position of recently having found a pony to share. I cannot afford financial contribution which owners are ok about & as pony is on livery there are no jobs, I simply turn up, groom, tack up & ride. It works well as I have a retired horse so miss riding & they don't have enough time to give the pony all of the work it needs so we're helping each other out.
All others horses/ponys I've ridden before have belonged to people I already know and/or I have done jobs in return for rides and it's never even been mentioned. However I replied to a horsemart ad for this share so don't know the people at all although they seem lovely, and a friend has suggested a share agreement as back up just in case.
I have rider insurance for me, which includes emergency vet fee's & tack cover etc and as no money is exchanging hands and no jobs are required I'm not sure what would need to go in such a contract. Can only think of covering things such as if pony is hurt as a result of me riding it or if pony is off work for any reason if I would continue to go and see him or not. But not sure how to put this into a contract.
Any ideas?

If I remember later I will pm u a copy of the agreement I use. It mainly talks about do's and don't s ( must wear high vis on road, boots to jump, not use any diffrrent tack without prior agreement, not clip or pull mane etc) notice period, insurance, who is responsible for what and when I.e if one if us wants to swap days etc etc

My sharer makes a small financial contribution so some of the stuff will not be relevant but it's a start.

I would ask the owner though. I would be pleased if a sharer asked me to arrange snow agreement as it would show they were serious.

I'm a big fan of share agreements as they keep freindships in the end. No-one assumes something the other side doesn't know. It is all clear and simple.

My daughter's first pony is on share remaining with us becuase although we do still compete him occasionally - and hunt him in season - she has to focus on her showjumpers and school work. Share agreements make sure that veryone knows where they stand, what they pay for and what they don't etc.

I too have a blank one if you want sight of another version - PM me if you do.

Regardless of whether money is being exchanged or not you still need an agreement to cover both you and the owners.

You can download a sample loan agreement from the BHS website which is easily adaptable for shares - however the owner needs to be the one who writes it, not you. http://www.bhs.org.uk/ownership-advice/buying-and-loaning-horses/advice-on-loaning

The owner needs to stipulate what you can and cant do on the horse, what they are responsible for and what you will be responsible for, what happens in the event of an injury to the horse whilst in your care.....etc. All these kinds of things need to be covered, just in case.

I know it all seems a bit formal and chances are you will never need to use it, but better to be safe than sorry :)

Thanks for the replies, if anyone can PM me a copy of the agreement they've used that would be fab.
I'm all for having an agreement in place but as sharer not owner wasn't sure what should go in it, if I have a sample I could give to them they can decide if they want to or not I suppose.
