I have owned my special boy (Danny) for 10 years. 18 mths ago i decided to get a sharer as he was starting to get a bit cross that i had a newer younger model and he wasn't my number one anymore.
My sharer (Liz) has kept him on the yard as her own and has really had him all to herself for this time, although i have ridden and cared for him a few times.
Last year he took her eventing for the first time ever for her, cumulating in a win at the Area 12 Horse Trials qualifier and then on to Aston for the Champs where the team came a credible 8th and Danny and Liz individual 13th. He jumped DC in both. We have had hours of fun together, competing, doing plesure rides, sharing lessons and the whole experience has been fab.
I look at my boy and see how happy he is to be someones no 1 again.
I have always worried about him in his teenage years - he's 16 now. What if Liz decided she was unable to share him anymore and i had to resume full responibilty for him again? I have just bought another 2 youngsters so i now have a 2 year old filly and 4, 5 and 6 year old geldings. I worried that he may come last to be ridden etc as he is so sensible and doesn't need as much work.
I said i would never sell him and that he had a home for life with me as he was my horse of a lifetime but a month ago i offered him to Liz to buy. It has been a very tough choice between breaking a promise i made 10 years ago and doing what is right for my boy. Liz has been very cautious in making the decision into owning a horse full time but i was overjoyed when yesterday she agreed to take him on.
Danny is never sick or sorry, he is without doubt 'the perfect' horse and i am so proud of the fact that he has provided me with my best grounding into horse ownership that anyone could have.
He will stay with us until Liz is 110% sure she is happy with her choice of livery yard, she is going to visit several times to make sure and talk with people. When Danny leaves to live with Liz we will still pick them up to compete and train together and when Liz goes on holiday Danny will return to me for his holiday too.
I will miss him dearly, the place won't be the same without him, but he is going to an amazing home and i don't beleive i have the right to deny him this just because of breaking a promise i made in my 20's. My life has changed and so has his. I'm just so pleased that he will get to live out his days as the apple of someone's eye who cares for him as much as me. He will alwasy have a very special place in my heart and i am pleased to share the pleasure that he has given me time and time again.
