I am after some general help and advice please, I am thinking about getting a sharer for my boy, this is an idea I have been mulling over for some months now, I am at a lovely yard with fantastic people who i know would support me in this if i decided to go ahead, my main reason for this is I work full time and have an elderly mother who is needing a little more support and a husband who i feel i do not spend enough time with even though he never complains and is very supportive in fact without him i dont know what I would do sometimes...
Selling my boy is not an option nor is full loan i would go stir crazy

So I guess what im asking is if i decided to go down the share route would the following sound fair

3 days a week one to be Sunday and two other in the week, I would want to be around for the first couple of weeks till I was confident with the person, Stable duties on the Sunday and poo picking on the week days i like this done everyday in the nice weather, he is a good horse to ride i would like them to hack out with someone else to start with then relax over time as they get to know him, Financial contribution of £100 per month approx.
I would still do the mornings everyday of the week apart from Sunday if the person could not be up early enought for turning out.

Any advice appriciated

Thank you

Some thoughts:
- poo-picking during the week will rule out a lot of people with jobs if you need it done in the winter (due to the dark). So, if this is summer-only (or just the Sunday would be Ok in winter) then probably best to say so.
- 100/month is quite a lot for a happy hacker with no facilities and poo-picking etc required. If the yard has floodlights/school/jumps/tea room etc you should mention those in your add. Also mention if the horse can do anything besides hacking.

As a guide I pay 10/day for a horse who can school (low level), jump (higher than I'll ever need), hack and do a little (strong) xc. Yard has floodlight outdoor school with good range of jumps, hacking requires road work but horse good in traffic and fields nice. Horse on full livery so no chores at all.

Good luck find someone both you and horse are very happy with :-)

He can jump and there is a flood lit school and a second one to hack to also that can be used no tea room though, lots of hacking mos of it off road. Poo picking in winter would be done by me as light nights would be gone im only thinking about summer time less flys attracted if taken up daily.

I am not stating he is a happy hacker only, but now know how not to word any advert i would place

When I advertised my mare I used this ad :

14 year old, 15.2 m/w ID/Conn mare for share. Based at a lovely yard near xx on DIY. Yard facilities : gallops, xc course, outdoor school and indoor school. Fantastic hacking.
Cost would depend on number of days required.
She is a genuine allrounder and is forward going but sane.
Hacks alone and in company.
Confident, calm/quiet rider needed.

When they rang I explained about poo picking, and when they came to meet me we went through everything else.

With that ad I managed to get 2 sharers for my mare, charged them the daily cost of keeping her for each day they committed to.

I then had to move as petrol costs to/fro the yard were too expensive and kept 1 sharer reducing the cost as I trust her totally with my horse.

Go with your gut instinct when meeting them and seeing them ride would be my other advice, I didn't and almost ended up with a disastrous sharer.

Can you tell us a bit more about your horse?

How well schooled is he, how big does he happily jump, is he a novice ride, would you let the person compete?

He is a 16hh 7 year old WB, Stabled on a DIY yard he jumps around 3ft although this is not his favorite activity.
Schools well can be a little lazy is not spooky or nasty hacks alone (can be a little spooky ) totally fine in company there is a floo-lit school with jumps on site lots of off road hacking minimal road work needed, friendly yard not a big yard but people to ride out with. Instructors welcome Field and stable are very close as well as the water supply auto water drinker in the field so all very easy he is a very friendly chap very easy to handle.
Apologies for the rambling post, any advice would be helpful

I'd say go for it. I reckon approx £15 per week would be a suitable contribution (I'm of the opinion that sharers are doing the owners a favour and shouldn't be ripped off!).

Put enough in your ad to attract potential sharers, but not so much to scare them off (lots of people on here can help with your ad if you need it)

Go through wanted ads on the internet and in tack shops and contact those people to see if they're still looking. Now is the perfect time of year to start the share as we're just coming into summer.

Good luck!

I think what you are proposing sounds fine. You'll still be saving them the early morning starts and the real cost and the commitment that ownership entails. For some sharers this is ideal, not everyone can afford the time or expense of having a horse, while others wish to share as a stepping stone to gaining enough knowledge to buy their own horse. At £100 a month, its still more riding than a RS can offer for that price, while gaining a bond with one horse and enjoying a horse-filled way of life.

Your facilities are fine, your horse would be lovely for someone reasonably competent to ride, so a good deal, really. Just be careful about who you have as a sharer, a good one is worth their weight in gold, while a bad one is just another demand on the time, energy and stress levels.

Thank you all for your replies i will pop and add together and see what you think, and contact my insurance company as want to make sure fully covered before i do anything further

Thank you again much appriciated
