Hi Everyone.

Im considering part loaning/sharing my 11 year old gelding this spring/summer mainly because i would like him to go to shows and do other things with someone whos more into showing etc, i love looking after them, but im not that big on shows! And having 3 is fairly time consuming.

How popular do you think sharing is, and what do you expect do get for it?

I was thinking along the lines of 3/4 days a week to suit the sharer, around 15 pounds a week, opportuntiy to show etc. Also can you put restrictions can you put, ie my pony had a leg injury a few years ago and although completely sound, if hes ridden in deep mud, or jumped alot on hard ground, he has gone lame and obvioulsy that would be a concern that someone didnt over do it with him.

Just after some advice and opinions really! Thanks in advance!

He's your horse, you can set any rules you like about what can and can't be done with him, just make sure the person who shares him knows this!

Get to know the person interested, have a chat on the phone first, then invite them to come see/ride your horse etc see how you get on (usually tell what a person is like/if you'll get on etc over the phone/in person) before commiting to anything.

And a contract is always stressed upon in these circumstances, about what days, monies etc etc (list goes on) but can be a very good and rewarding way of keeping your horse, good luck!

Yes sounds like a good plan. I did once have a sharer for my old horse, it worked out generally very well, but in the end she didnt seem to appreciate that my elderly horse who was in his 20's really wasnt up to an intensive schooling session 3 times a week!!

I think if i lay the rules down clearly from the start then it should be ok! I think it will be best for my pony this way, he likes going to shows and someone who enjoys shows may aswell have the chance, unlike me who has asthma attacks at them!!hehe.

I share a horse. He is 17 and has mild arthritis, so the rules that were set out at the start was that I wasn't to canter or gallop on very hard or very soft ground, that we should try and exercise him 6 days a week whenever possible (he is better with daily light exercise). I've stuck to that!
