im thinking of sharing my horse out but was wondering on other peoples expeiriances with it one girl on my yard has had an awful time with hers and im slightly conciensious about loaning my boy out as im very picky about who rides him can you do this with a sharer?

i'd be looking at two days a week one of which would be a day at the weekend preferably a saturday the yard he is at has fabulous off road hacking schools gallops and jumps etc however he would be living in so they would have to muck out on the day at the weekend and be up in time to turn out unless my mum could do it

he is a very safe horse with a confident rider but not for a novice they could do as much as they wanted just with being a student its a bit hard thanks

I had someone who used to come and ride one of my horses as I did not have time to ride them both myself. Everything was going great until I went on holiday and the lady tried to jump the big lad, bearing in mind he hadn't jumped for around six months, it was windy, her partner was taking photos using flash and they had taken their big dogs down who he wasn't used to and were barking their heads off the upshot was he spooked, bucked and she bailed out. It was by no means the horse's fault, my neighbour watched the whole thing but she broke her arm badly, and is still in some pain three months later. If I had been there I wouldn't have let this happen but I still feel terrible about it and have vowed never to let anyone else ride my horses unless I know they are extremely capable. My lad hasn't a bad bone in his body and fortunately he has continued to be a star with me but it has made me nervous to let anyone even sit on them.

Of course you can be picky with a sharer - this is your horse you are talking about. You need to know that whoever you allow to ride him is going to look after him as well as you do

Grill the potential sharer as to experience , what they want to do and watch them ride etc.

Good luck with the hunt for the right sharer

hey
I would talk to the person who will be shareing your horse about your consern or when you put the add out be sure to say has to be very confidnt and who has been riding for ages .

I am sure loads of people will want to share your horse as he sounds wonderfull.=)

I used to share and had a wonderfull horse called kenny and the lady was lovely but she ws having him profesonaly skld so i had to give up =(

hope you find one soon x

Thx laurenjoy221. It was a real shame as I get on really well with the lady and it was the perfect arrangement. Didn't want any money but she chipped in with his shoes and it was nice to have the company out hacking.

thanks for the advice guys i just want a bit of a hand too get him up to fitness again will need to talk to mum and my instructor about it i just dont want it too affect him to much

I am looking for a sharer too. My current one as been riding my boy for some months now but has just told me she is thinking not to carry on (I suspected this). Good luck, whereabouts are you? Hope we are not fighting in the same area!!

Unfortunately there are plenty of numpty owners as well as numpty sharers

- and we all had to start somewhere. If you don't get on with a sharer its pretty easy to get rid of them.

I shared my pony a lot as a child/ teenager and for the most part it worked. Hardly anyone looks after them like you do but you have to decide what is important - some people do things differently but not necessarily wrongly - just different - sometimes this is hard to deal with. I've also been on the other end as the "sharer" and quite honestly I looked after them better than the owners. One horse I had just taken on got badly kicked in the field when the owner was on holiday - it had to have 5 days worth of antibiotic injections I bathed and cold hosed and hand walked it at least twice a day every day and had its box immaculate. I never got any thanks and as soon as it was healed I came up the yard to find they had done a round of horseball after about a months box rest and a week in the field and it was encrusted in dried sweat - that and the previous loan horse whom I insisted the owner get the vet out as it was constantly lame (he couldn't tell)was diagnosed with navicular. After that I thought never again - if I had my own horse again I wouldn't have to deal with numpty owners

I think in particular if someone is paying for the privilege of sharing your horse then you must also be fair and reasonable to them as long as they are not putting your horse at risk.
