I have a couple of horses whom i compete, but i have one smaller mare a 15.3hh warmblood x show / dressage mare, and i was thinking of advertising her for share, as i dont really have enough time??

Where should i advertise her, and what sort of money figures do people charge for a share horse??

there would be competitions involved if wished.

Im in devon if that makes any difference?

Many Thanks

Newrider.com

Price would be dependent on how many times a week a sharer could have the horse, what chores they would need to do etc.... but I think it averages between £8 and £15 a ride really

Ditto newrider.

Cost depends largely on days avaliable and what sort of livery the horse is on - if they are on diy and therefore will be expected to muck out/poo pick etc the costs are less, if part or full livery more accordingly.

Well i will do the horse most of the time as i have others there, although they are on diy, so its only really the riding and the feed and the shoes, and the caring for her 3 days roughly, i will muck out.

So i was thinking £35 per week, does that sound right,
or is that too much??

I'm a sharer and wouldnt pay £140 a month, but I'm sure some people would, advertise and see if you get any interest, if not drop the price!

I wouldn't pay that much either, doesn't cost me that much to keep my own horse without a sharer!!!!!!!! I suppose it depends how much you're going to let the sharer do with the horse and how often. After all, you could get one or two lessons per week with no responsibility for £30.

I'm a sharer and wouldn't pay that either! But yeh im sure some people would, especially if there's a chance to compete! Like Lexiedhb said, if you dont get any response drop the price!

I know my share horse costs 30GBP/week to keep out with mixed herd and with own stable in a pretty nice DIY place. Obviously there are lots of other costs (including your time in this case) but that makes 35GBP/week seem a touch much for the sharer to pay? I pay 20GBP/week plus half of shoes.

Well i would take her to comps for them etc if they competant enough,

I was just working back all the costs of keeping her, also what about vets fees????

Who pays those me i suppose?

Sorry wanted to ask how much you guys pay???

She costs me

Feed £20 week
Haylage £2 day
Livery £25 week
Shoes £60 every 6 weeks
Insurance £28 every month

How do you guys keep your horses for less??

I know what you mean about the other costs - when I said 30/week I mean that is his livery, there are no feed costs in the summer as he lives out.

I have to have my own rider's insurance (BHS Gold membership) but everythign else the owner takes care of.

/But/ I think it is important to remember that he will never be mine and I don't get to make decisions aout him. So splitting the total costs along days/week lines wouldn't really be as fair as it first sounds.

I have my horses on DIY and have a sharer for one of them, she can do whatever days she likes, as i do not ride this one and the days she cannot do I do, I do not expect her to muck out poo pick or anything apart from ride and spend time with him although she will muck out if i havent and will feed if she needs to etc so very flexible he is unshod and i charge £70 pcm and she provides her own insurance and pays for her own lessons, plus we compete when possible. I think £35 is a bit steep but you never know..

Mine costs me £20 a month to six weeks in feed!!! 15.3 ID x TB.
I rent a field, bought my own field shelter. Farrier bill was £40 per 6 to 7 weeks but thats just doubled as had to have rear shoes put back on. Not feeding hay as on starvation on the grass!! LOL!!!

I wish you the best of luck, I know I couldn't share my horse, I can't even share her with the OH who's done way more with horses than me!!!! I don't trust ANYONE enough to let them near my horse!!! Well, except the vet and farrier (this Saddo will go hang her head in shame!!)

Also ditto what Tickles says about the fact that hte horse is yours and will never be the sharers.

Don't mess about with vets fees. You are the owner, vets' fees are your responsibility, not the sharer's. It might be sensible to put in your share agreement that if the horse is injured as a direct result of something the sharer did, then she is liable for part of the vets' fees, or the excess on your insurance or something.

It is wise to insure your horse if you have a sharer, even if you don't normally bother.

I think they should only have to contribute to the usual things, farrier/routine injections/dentist/back person....as well as any one off vet bills, replacement tack, and hay/hard feed if on DIY after all they are doing you a favour by keeping your horse in work, just what I'd expect if I was sharing my horse.
