Due to the lack of reports post - thought i would bore you all with mine!

Shaun's 1st run of the season was BE100 at Kirriemuir on Sunday! Was aiming for an okish dressage, clear showjumping and clear XC before we go Novice at Central Scotland in 2 weeks!

Hired a 3.5 tonne box to get us there (about 2.5hrs away) and had the helping hand of TPO :-)

Our dressage has always been a sore point, so wasnt expecting anything special! Shaun worked in well, and with some help with TPO felt that it was probably the best we had worked in at a BE event! Anyway went in and it allm went to pieces - i ended up going wrong as well and Shaun was being a total pain in the pants! Checked scores and yes we got 48.5 - worst dressage mark to date and worst in the class. Totally soul destroying!!

Anyhow, went off to walk the XC - and thought that we shouldnt have any problems. Just needed to remember to give him a smack before the water and make sure he didnt have any chance to nap!!

So onto showjumping which is usually our best phase - but he was very very spooky and a bit hard to contain! Had one down - a pink and purple dogleg. Was slightly disappointed with this, but have to remember that he and me lost of confidence back in Dec and this is the 1st track he has jumped since then! So fingers crossed it will improve and he will get his head out his @ss!

Onto the XC, had a nap out of the start box and wiggled about over the 1st three! But after that he got moving! Ended up launching himself off the drop with me clinging on for dear life! Fine over everything else and ok through the water! So happy with that - nice and confidence building before our 1st Novice run at Central! Dead pleased because he has improved a lot with his confidence in this phase since his 1st run last yr.

So all in all pretty disappointed and after some soul searching i have decided the try a calmer for both of us before the dressage phase - if anyone knows of any good ones then can you let me know? If not i reckon a bottle of wine should do the trick!

Thanks for reading and sorry no pics!!

P.S lovely to meet Mrs and Mr Figjam! And TPO for all her amazing help! xxx

sounds like a plan, reading it does sound like the only way is up and it is start of season

i'll swap your dressage problems to my sj problems????

Well done again! And yay for another report! :D

I am in no position to advise about improving dressage I'm afraid! A few folk on here recommend AAA spray which you can buy on ebay. Supposed to be a natural calmer for both horse and rider! Can't remember the name of the company who make/sell it, but someone else on here will I'm sure.

Practically everyone in the PN/Nov were having that pink/purple skinny SJ down, as well as no.5 and no.6, so you did well there!

I also had a very wiggly pony up the first stretch, so again, not alone. :) I don't think you should be too disappointed, although I complain about my pokey-nose pony, I am very happy to have a good jumping horse, so can put up with the DR nonsense and just keep plugging away trying to improve it while having fun doing the jumping! ;)

Will try get my grubby mitts on some photos for you, had some SJ and through the water. :)

Checked scores and yes we got 48.5 - worst dressage mark to date and worst in the class. Totally soul destroying!!

Don't worry - we're the same as you!! We did a very tense test (horsey doesn't like the XC running right next door!) but still accurate. Ended up with 45.7, a dreadful score and same as you - LAST in the class (novice). Our dressage is always our worst phase, I get so worked up over it I always ride like a plank of wood meaning my poor horse ends up stiff and tense because of me :( But we've never had the worst score in the whole class before :( Was gutted to say the least. I've tried calmers (for me) like Kalms and Rescue Remedy but to be honest, they then make me TOO calm for the XC phase!

Oh, and we had the purple and pink skinny down as well! Thankfully my boy is a XC machine so he raced round that no problem absolutely loving it (we only go for the XC!). We ended up being placed which is amazing considering the dressage!

Sounds like your XC was a breeze though so well done! Best of luck with your first novice. Novice isnt nearly as scary as you probably think ;)

Don't be so hard on yourself missus!! You both worked in great for dressage and I think the bell/whistle unsettling Shaun as he was going past knocked him off his stride. He definitely wasn't generous and didn't help you out in the arena but you rode quietly and kept him forward which was a huge achievement as the last thing you want to do when they go like that is push them forward!

The AAA stuff that FJ mentioned was what I was trying to get at; I *think* Kat B or K9H on here have something to do with it so might be worth PM'ing. The placebo effect might be enough to help you when you're stuck within the scary white boards!

Shaun is such a dude; it was a pleasure to share polos with him!

I've uploaded the pics of you warming up for dressage but my computer isn't playing when I try to upload the SJ and XC vids but I'm working on it and will pm/email you the links once I get it sorted.

Dressage warm up pics (Mr FJ has NOTHING to worry about!! lol)

Here's to Central and going Novice :)

Hey hun,

don't be too down it's only the first of the season & you've been snowed in all winter. Nupafeed worked really well with DA but sometimes you have to try a few to find one that suits your horse. Just check the ingredients are legal!

See you at Scone, wibble!

Try rescue remedy, I drink the stuff a)before trying to load the horse b) before the dressage and c)before the cross country - I should really take shares out in the stuff! Seriously though it really helps me.

Well done with what sounds like a great xc round, I'm doing the BE100 at the unaff HT this weekend and can't wait!!

Good luck going Novice at Scone!

Flo's problem is lack of attention, and two calmers which work well are Magnitude, and the Global Herbs Supercalm.

Re the report - well done, good first run after a horrid long winter. Good luck with the novice.

Well done for the SJ and XC, I wouldn't be worrying about a pole as like you say you've come a long way from where you were in the winter. Plus it was a nasty skinny iirc from other reports and I've never seen a skinny BE before so it's nothing to worry about. And don't stress about the dressage as 2 out of 3 isn't bad and you know he can work much better for you. Chin up and best of luck for your Novice I'm sure you'll be absolutely fine :)!

Sorry about my late reply - got out of work early yesterday so scuttled off to the horse in the sun :-D

Kick_on - Yes it does doesnt it, and ok i'll swap you! Would be nice to have a dressage pony for once!

Figjam - Thats very true i suppose, I am glad he doesnt seem phased by either jumping phases! Just wish he would listen a bit more and not have to gawk at everything!

Magic Melon - You sound like me, i warm up okish but as soon as i get between those white boards i get as tense as anything then its giraffe time! Its so frustrating! Re. the calmers thats what im worried about, I dont want to be going novice XC half asleep ;-)

TPO - thankies for putting up the pics! I sent you an email this morning! Was ace to have you there to help all day, and i think you have found a friend forever in Shaun - as long as you have a carrot :-P

Nicole - Yes wibble wibble! How was XC training at greenfields?

Olivio - Thanks for the luck, i reckon we will need it! Will try rescue remedy and hope it helps!

Fiona - Thank you for the advice, will have a swizz round the internet when noone at work is looking :-D

Jumptoit - thank you! I do think dressage is the most soul destroying part of BE though...

Hi, that sounds all absolutely fine & normal for a slightly rusty first run of the season. I will give you my bottle of rescue remedy at Scone as I wont be needing any for while;) Not remotely sure it does anything at all but some people swear by it.

Now then this could possibly NOT be you but I just glanced down the page of thumbnail pics from Peak Photo & this one caught my eye due to the ultra neat front legs, clicked on & thought it looked an awful lot like Shaun, maybe if its not you you could just claim it is anyway cos its a good photo:D

See you at Scone:)

haha!! Yes it is! ooooh he looks so ginger in that! And yes look at his little toes and tucked up, thats cheered me up no end! Least i have a good jumping pony!

Thank you for posting it missus!

And thank you Joss - means a lot that you dont think it was awful xxxx
