Is anyone else having major problems getting hold of shavings such as hunters, easibed, beddown?

Our feed shop is only selling 3 bales per person so i have to go every week rather than buying 30+ in one go.

The prices have also increased.

Night mare......

yeah, having the same problem and have quite a few horses to have shavings.
and gone up a £1 per bag, £6 now, unless you buy 300 bales and then it goes down to £5.30 per bale.

From what I have been told, my understanding is that shavings are a by-product of the building industry. Where the housing market has ground to a halt, new builds aren't going ahead and all round belt tightening, wood is not being used in such quantity - hence problems getting hold of shavings all over the UK.

I guess that now is the time to look at alternatives to shavings as I can't see things improving in the short term.

We are not having a problem getting hold of easi bed but the other type of shavings are either not in stock or over £7 a bale. We pay £5.80 for Easi Bed

My shavings man delivered to me today my usual order, he assures me he won't have any problem supplying his customers, & the price is still reasonable.

When I was in CWG this week they said that there was some sort of strike on that was causing the problem. Certainly Bedmax are made specially for horses and are not a by product of the building trade, though I am sure other varieties are being affected by this.

Large flake shavings such as bedmax, mendip and Natural flake are not byproducts as they are specifically made for equine bedding, however increased demand for these because there are less Hunters, snowflake etc mean that suplies are tight even though factories are working 24 hrs. January will be a nightmare with the Christmas break and no production for 2 weeks when we are hand to mouth now!!

Can anyone tell me what the difference is between Natures Best, Woodypet, Aquamax? Are they all much the same? does anyone use natures best & how do they find it.

We have a shavings shortage, like the rest of the UK!!

Bought 25 bales of Countrywide's 120 litre bales yesterday @£7.19 a bale as nowhere else has any, or is rationing to 3 bales max!
Local tack shop had a price increase from £6.75 to £8.15 per bale, since last weekend!

Natures Best and Aquamax are much the same, Natures Best is cheaper. I have never heard of Woodypet.

Where abouts in the UK are you?

Welcome to the forum by the way!

Thank's very much Scotch Mist, i'm in Gourock/Inverkip, in Inverclyde.

I think we' managed to find some paper bedding £4/bale or we have a local supplier of Nature Best £5.50/£5.99/bag. Any suggestions on what's best?

Our yard can no longer can get shavings, we go through 90 bales a month! They have switched to Bedmax now which we are getting charged about £7 a bale for. But I am not so keen but we do have a sawmill near us where it is £3.50 for a bale in which 2 bales gave me a whole new bed.

Most of the people on my yard are going for paper!! Shred a Bed i think the company is called, £5/bale, not sure what size the bales are. If anyone is interested I can get the number.

we're not having any problem with supply but I've just got back from CCF with 5 bales in the car. they are £5.80 plus VAT! I normally buy woodchip in bulk [ a trailer load] but just needed a small amount to tide me over till next delivery. i have paid £37 odd for 5 shavings and a bag of carrots.
Its getting v.expensive.

Someone rang round suppliers the other day to try and get an alternative source of hunters and they said they were not taking on any new customers as they can barely cope with demand from existing customers.

I use Aquamax and that has just shot up in price because of the £/$ exchange rate.
Ordered 80 bales before the prices changed at 5.65 a bale

My other half knows about these things, Nedbedz had a death in the family and are no longer taking on new suppliers and cutting down current ones due to a brief halt in production for that and poor weather, he informs me that they will run out of supplies by Christmas, Bedmax also running out for various reasons and Hemcore had a problem with a factory fire. Most Equine bedding manufacturers seem to have had problems with the poor weather over last few years and straw is set to rise as it is more economically viable to plough it in to save on the cost for fertilizing the fields with bought in products.

Sorry but thats defamatory and inaccurate - you really should think twice about posting rumours and gossip on a public forum. I'm connected with the company and yes sadly there was a loss in the family recently but there has never been a halt in production and supplies will certainly not run out by Christmas - far from it. The company is going from strength to strength and the last three months have been the busiest yet. Yes they're not taking on any new retailers or wholesalers at the moment for Nedz Pro but are doing for their new product Nedz Advance. And they are definitely not cutting down on any existing suppliers - everyone who has established orders with Nedz will continue to get supplied. Come next year they will probably be looking to take on new retailers/suppliers again. The poor harvest has made straw in shorter supply than normal but Nedz source from all over the country and have plenty to keep them in stock until next years harvest (which will hopefully be much better) and have worked extremely hard to ensure their customers are not disappointed.

Yes, our feed store limits you to 2 bales a week which does not do mine for the week as they are often stabled a lot in winter plus the price is over £7. Hopeless...

i went to 3 places and they were all short of soft chip/easybed!!!
i bought 30 bales
(they are limiting it) and it cost about £200. apparently everything is on the increase and alot of suppliers cant get hold of it! CWG are struggling and have been for some time! Id love to have mine on straw but for health reasons i really cant justify it!

It would appear that alot of bedding suppliers are not taking on any new customers at the moment. We sourced paper bedding, I have never worked with this & cant say i'm looking forward to it, anyway the guy we got the bedding from said we were the last 'new' customer/s he was taking on. I dont not for sure but i think this is probably due to alot of people like myself panicing & panic buying therefor these suppliers can not meet the needs of all these new demand instantly.

Thankfully I have 20 bales of paper shavings coming in the next couple of weeks so the pressures off for a while!! I managed to find quite a few alternative bedding company so we should be ok - I hope!!

I cannot see what is defamatory about that at all IMO and its not rumour either so please get off your high horse.

I really hate it when people do this on forums but as this is a serious issue I'm going to do it anyway:

Dictionary definition of defamatory:
injurious to reputation, slanderous or libelous.

Dictionary definition of libelous:
publication of something false which damages a person's reputation, any damaging or unflattering representation or statement

You stated that Nedz would run out of product by Christmas - which is totally false.
You stated that Nedz were cutting down on suppliers they already have - totally false.
You also stated that production had been halted because of a death in the family and the poor harvest - again a totally false statement... production was never halted for either reason.

Both statements could damage the reputation of the company if people choose to believe what you posted.

I didn't report you to the Moderators but I did mention your post to Nedz and they weren't happy at all. They've heard all these rumours on numerous occasions from their customers and have been doing damage limitation to quash them for the last couple of months. The fact that their business rivals and other people in the horse business world seek to capitalise on the very sad circumstances is dispicable IMO and people posting such rumours on very popular forums like HHO doesn't help one bit.

So no, sorry, I won't 'get off my high horse'. I'm defending friends of mine who are going through a tough enough time already.
