Can I use trimmers to do my cobs legs and hog his mane? I don't intend to clip this year but I prefer him hogged and his legs need to be done otherwise he gets v itchy and gets scabs. My friend does him with her clippers atm but I was wondering how well trimmers would work on these areas?

The trimmers won't be robust enough to hog or clip your horses feather, they will be up to using as maintenance though once you've hogged and trimmed him.

Trimmers won't do it - unless you have a TB with tiny tufts. Cobs feather/mane is tough stuff, and I speak from experience of clipping out many legs and manes.

If he is having problems with scabs and itching then he may well have mites. Clipping alone will not cure him.

They are normally easy to get rid of. Get some frontline from your vet and spray the legs from knee/hock to coronet band. That should do the initial treatment.

Maintenance is then easy, apply pig oil and sulphur throughout the winter and in summer wet/wash out the legs and rub a few handfuls of sulphur into them every couple of weeks to keep beasties away.

PM me if you want the full details of oil and sulphur application - not expensive and also good for preventing mud fever.
