Hi all,

Just wondering if anyone else is having this problem with the rising cost & lack of supply with shavings?
I'm in South East England, near Amersham(!). We normally order 100 bales shavings at a time, as storage is not a problem, but are running desperately low & no one seems to have any?! We were paying £5 for a standard bale of non branded shavings last summer / autmn, but they have gone up twice in the last few weeks to £6.50 / bale. Now the supplier is saying he has virtually no stock left! We've tried a few other places but again very little stock & very high prices.
Does anyone know why this is?
Any other suggestions for suppliers in the SE?
What does everyone else pay for regular 'unbranded' bales?
Any help grately appreciated!!

In same sort of area as you, Hunters are like gold dust, got Snowflake last time and had a few bags of Woburns. Sometimes can get unbranded ones. I get them at a few different places depending on where I am at the time. I don't have anywhere to store them so have to get 2 at a time, all that will fit in my car! I suppose I pay higher as not buying in bulk but I have been paying from £6.25 back in the summer to £7.10 now. Sometimes can get unbranded Euros but not much difference in price.
There have been posts on here recently which have said about a fire in one of the manufacturers sites and about China buying up all the wood in Europe so any surplus shavings we may have got in the past are just not available. Even heard one about one manufacturer getting their shavings from companies that do decking, the fact that we had a wet summer no one was buying decking so there was no by-product of shavings!

i run a tack shop and are having a real issue with shavings!!
Hunter are being useless with supply and we are aelling out on a pre-book basis of these approx 4 weeks in advance of delivery.
Unbranded/dutch shavings are going up in price at a rate of knots due to many factors (including fires/diesel prices etc).
We are currantly having to try and find a new supply of decent shavings the main problem with us is the customers all they want is hunter!

It does seem to be a problem. Frogpool have had problems since before Christmas, they have just got some hunters in, but I dont think they will be around for long. I went to Speedgate to get mine, a little bit of a trip, but at least they had some.

I pay £6.00 per bale for Minimal Dust or £6.25 for Champion Chip - i'm based in Blackpool. There isn't a shortage as such, but they do seem to have gone up drastically in price - this time last year there were about £0.75 cheaper than they are now.

I'm not sure what you all think but someone at my yard suggested that the shortage problem may be something to do with the fact tht we are cutting down trees on the planet at an alarming rate?

I am very lucky. i have just brought BedMax for £5.50 a bale and Snowflake soft chip shavings for £4.50 a bale. There is only one supplier near us with prices that good though

I just can't get good ones. I like hunter, alspan or snowflake but both Frogpool & speedgate don't have any and Frogpool told me none until the summer!!!!! Help

I wonder if anyone can help, I was thinking of buying enough shavings for the winter. I am based near Kettering. Any idea where the best place to get them from and what price I should be paying?

Thanks
Luke

There still seems to be a shortage of horse bedding with the likes of snowflake. One of my pals runs an equestrian centre in hertfordshire and she recently got some shavings from a company in Kettering - Ashwood Smoking Chips. Very good quality! They don't have a website but try this link web page, I don't know what she paid though.
