I have always baulked from putting the above rugs on my horse in the stable as I assume shavings will stick to them. Am I right in my assumption? I tend to wash my lightweight/summer sheet type rugs pretty often (they almost always wear summer sheets under their stable rugs) and am just concerned that I will find shavings in all sorts of odd places! How does everyone else cope with this?

you are right, they will be covered in shavings, especially fleece & thermatex, don't do it. Cotton sheets and similar are ok as they just brush off.

the Bucas cooler is quite good as it's fleece inside, but cotton outside. I use that if b needs something on, but generally i leave on his outdoor rug.

LOL! Love the 'don't do it' - and thanks for your honesty! My little horsey does have these luxuries, just never allowed them to be rolled in - some of the fleeces look so cosy though and I have been tempted! My other horse is on Hemcore, which doesn't seem to stick as much - any experience with that?

is hempcore like easibed? a bit more woody? i think it is, in which case, yes it's just as bad. B has a lovely wardrobe of fleeces and a gorgeous thermatex, but he's only allowed to wear them for shows until they are old and tatty and then he can wear them in bed.

Hemcore is pretty much the same as Aubiouse - made from hemp. It doesn't seem to stay in the tail like shavings and the summer sheet doesn't seem to have them stick to it - maybe I should just play safe and keep them for outings.

Shires do a rug called 'Westbourne'

Thats fleece on the inside with a nylon outer !
Sol has one on the way as I can't be dealing with Shavings stuck everywhere !

Mine wear fleeces/thermatex etc on shavings. I just shake their rugs off every day as I take them off. They get washed weekly too.

CM - do you use the house washing machine? I'm not overly fussy but not sure DH would appreciate shavings in his smalls! Or does the good shake seem to get rid of most of them?

You could perhaps put the summer sheet over the top of the fleece?

For me its not the shavings, its the stable stains that I cant stand. I have about 6 fleeces for each of them and 2 thermatex rugs and they get changed every so often as I hate dirty rugs (and I like buying new ones).

A good shake gets most of it off. In the normal washing machine, followed by yard coats/bandages etc

Oh blimey - my neds have snuggly fleeces and yes they do get covered in shavings but they DO shake off, or just flick a body brush over ned while the fleece is still on. I shove my fleeces in the washing machine and other stuff doesn't come out covered in shavings but if it bothered you, you could either pop it in a pillow case or do a wash JUST with ned's stuff! The only thing my OH dares mutter about is horse hair washed into his knickers after I've had a clipping session lol!
