Ok, I need your opinions :

I would like a Dry, Thick, Easy to maintain stable bed.

Shavings are getting increasingly expensive, so I am considering using Aquamax or Megazorb.

Or shall i just stay with nice fluffy white shavings?

All help appreciated!!

I use hemp bedding. If I could afford it, I would use Aubois but it is £1 per bale more than Hemcore. Hemcore is a british product. The bed is suitable for a semi deep litter type use. It is warm and comfortable and not dusty. They spray it with a citronella type frarence to keep flies out. It rots down really quick, so you have a small muckheap.

It is perfect for me because I keep two horses at home. I skip out in the mornings and once a week take out any wet that has crept to the top of the bed.

If you want a nice fluffy white bed then do not use aquamax .... it's a love it or hate it sort of product (I am in the hate it catagory) but if you use it you have to be prepared that it isn't like conventional bedding.

Haven't used/seen megasorb so can't comment on that

But I wouldn't use shavings any more, far superior products on the market IMO.

Currently use aubiose and am very impressed, key is to keep a deep bed and only take wet out periodically. I prefer aubiose (hemp) to flax, which I found moved a bit and got soggier quicker.

Another product I liked but can't source at the moment is shredded rape straw - marketed as bliss / neds beds pro and others

i've tried almost all the others, including aubiose, and have stuck with Ecobed for about the last 8 years. it is very warm, dry, dust-free (doesn't break down to dust with use, unlike shavings!), easy to muck out, mulches down really quickly. i wouldn't have anything else tbh, it makes a lovely clean bed i'd be happy to lie down in!

I switched earlier in the year to Nature's Best (like Aquamax) and yes it does take some getting used to - wood pellet bedding is a different concept - but I love it. It does go a kind of oatmeal colour but you can maintain a nice thick clean dry bed which doesn't smell with a minimum of effort. Best of all you have a much smaller muck heap, which rots down very quickly. And the bags are easy to store and handle and take up much less room than bales (about 90 bags to a pallet). It's light and easy to handle which means my bad back is holding up well this year! I've tried Aubiose and Easibed but this one is the by far the best (and cheapest!) so far.

i used to use bedmax and loved it...but as the pric went up, i changed to a bedding called Sundown Red, it is a mix of Large woodchip shavings and a bedding like nedz bedz..its brill and only £4.40 a bale, my stable is 4m x 4m and it only took 5bags to give a good deep bed with large banks..i dont think ill be chaging anytime soon
