Dig banks out and replace with new shavings.
If you put them in/on the bed, the next day you muck out and are taking them out straight away. Put them in the banks and youve got clean everywhere.
Less wastage and cleaner beds IMO.
I always pull down the banks and add the shavings there - this way the new lasts longer, and if you turn your banks each day you have a new bed for longer. I believe that if you just put them in the middle of the bed, it may look clean for one day, but you will end up removing them the next and therefore go through more bales....
All mine are on Rubber Matting with a small shavings bed, so they only have a bale each a week and that goes mostly into the banks, quick and simple.......
I do the same.. I used to pile the new shaving around the banks but she pulls them down. Now I pull banks into middle and mix through a bale, it dries the older shavings (not wet but browner if you know what I mean). Also the banks get compacted and when I do a mix the bed increases dramaticially in volume. Sometimes I think I have just too much time on my hands (when in fact I absolutely DON'T)
I muck out in the morning and put bed up, evening I bring bed down then on new shavings days clean gets put on bed itself. Obviously the following day it gets mixed in.
Poor lad only gets clean bed every 10 days! OH moans and says I'm lucky as my lad is so clean whereas his mare is known as the cement mixer
If I used banks I would go for the first option, for the reason stated by vicijp! However atm I just use shaving ontop of matting and generally sweep out in the am! Though if I use a lot of shavings, then I sometimes will mix them in - helps to air the bed = less wastage too!
