Pine is best as it is the most absorbent. I must admit I use any old shavings as I get them free down the saw mill but they ae usually a mix of pine and oak.

ETA Sorry, just realised it says SHOUDN'T use.

I was told that oak (which we have a lot of here) isn't particularly good but only due to its lack of absorbency. Don't know if there are any toxicity issues with any types.

do you find they are ok for your horse? the ones from the saw mill that is? are they more dusty or do you have to be extra careful with them? do you get a constant supply from them? thanks if you answer these questions x

Yes there are definately shavings that you should never use.I cant give you a comprehensive list, but as a general rule ,avoid all hardwoods. Some of the tropical hardwoods commonly used, can be particularly nasty.I knew a man who got a splinter from one , in a few hours he collapsed from blood poisoning "died" twice in hospital and came round 3 weeks later, with his health in ruins. The hardwoods tend to be fine and dusty, also commonly red in colour. If you value your horse avoid these like the plague.
