I'm looking for some recommendations on shaving brands? My horse is pretty clean so how many bales do you lay down to start the bed? I'm looking to just be topping up one a week I think. Thank you in advance!

How big is your stable?
Do you have rubber mats to build the bed on?
Are you planning to deep litter?

I have a huge stable and am deep littering without rubber mats underneath (just at the front) so we started with about 6. In summer we add one bale a week but it can be 3 per fortnight in winter. I also add some wood pellets at the bottom for the wet areas. I like thoroughbred shavings.

12x12, yes fully rubber matted I won't be deep littering. Ok, I will have a look at them, thank you.

I use mega spread and find although they are not the cheapest they go further, I don't have rubber mats so have a full thick bed so I would use about 7 bales to start the bed, if you have mats you probably won't need it so thick so less to start of with, mine mainly live out but come in to be ridden or if it's really wet, so if in overnight I would use 1 1/2 bales a week for each horse roughly.

I use bedmax on rubber mats. Think it was three bales to start and one a week to maintain. I started with them on my farriers recommendation when I was box resting a horse with laminitis, and just carried on.

I think you may struggle to keep to a bale a week if you are not deep littering. I do deep litter and my starter bed usually has about 4xwood pellets 20kg and about 6 halmac shavings bales...then about 2 a week to top up. maybe im doing this all wrong hahahha
