Our labrador picked up her first pheasant while out being a peg dog earlier this week- VERY pleased with her

she is going out again this weekend to scotland so hopefully will get a few more chances, but we are so so happy.
She had been struggling a lot in training to get hold of the bird so we are really pleased.
It was so sweet, i sent her over to get it, she stopped about 2 metres away and had her one leg in the air bent, her tail upright wagging and her nose right out. she than leaped right next to it- didn't touch it. and then just picked it up ever so carefully and brought it right back to me and my brother- cue lots and lots and lots of patting and making a fuss

Brilliant! How old is she? Ours picked up her first on Saturday and did fantastically. Ours is about 14 months, I only ask as I'm not sure when they are meant to start?

She is just turned 2, so although it seems a late start- for her it isn't. shes very immature and babyish and although she has clay pigeon shooting etc we just didn't feel she was up to it properly. We also had the issue of her not being able to get them in her mouth! LOL
I think it really varies on the dog tbh. Ours is so immature and acts like a baby still and so we left it a bit longer. She also had difficulty being around other dogs without our 2nd dog as she was VERY nervous so we sorted that out before taking her shooting!

Yes, hopefully now she will get more confident in doing it and will start doing it more often- she was a bit unsure to begin with but with lots of encouragement we got there! So pleased she did though... she will make a nice gun dog yet

I am SO pleased- we were quite worried as in training she wouldn't really pick a dummy or anything and when we had pheasants at home from shooting she tried to pick them up but really struggled. obviously something clicked which is great

shes off on her way to Scotland now for another weekend shooting!

Sorry I haven't been back...well done her (and you!). My OH says it just made his days shooting having a dog to work.
