Hello everyone.
I've been sharing my mare for about 7 months now and I have recently taken her on full loan which has meant moving yards. She's moved with another horse who was being shared and is in the same situation as me! Kiri is very happy in the stable but definitely not in the field. She's been separated from her friend as its mares and geldings in separate fields. She was never clingy before and is a bit of a loner and your typical mare. I thought she'd be fine but she galloped round like a loon and then jumped out.. Over a stile... She's done BE novice in her younger years so thought nothing of the stile and found her way to the geldings field. Since then I've hand grazed her in the field to get her used to it and the others.. Which she's been getting much better at so today (armed with magic calmer which she burnt straight through) we tried turning out again. I did the same as grazing and then quietly unclipped - she grazed for two minutes then determinedly walked to the stile where my dad was sitting to stop any repeats.. She was throroughly annoyed he was there and was trying to barge him out and looking like she was still going to jump (very out of character for her as she's polite in all other aspects) she did a perimeter lap of the field looking for other escape routes and wound herself up so I bought her back in before she hurt my dad and herself! Put her back in the stable and she's happy as larry. Stupid thing is ash (friend) can leave the yard without her caring it's just when she's in the field! She has approx 6 other mares if not a few more in with her and she's said hi to them over the fence but they take no notice of her going nutty! So at the moment she's living in which she's happy with but I just think it'd be nice for her to be out!! The stile is being changed to a kissing gate and that's all that can be done (I've asked all other questions like smaller paddock, fencing it off, being with ash all answered with no). But I'm worried she'll try jumping that and hurt herself!! I am quite against sedating her so please none of those suggestions as I don't want her to do something stupid while sedated then mess it up because she's not all there!! So any other opinions?!

Sedating her when she is trying to jump out isn't the right answer - as you say she'll misjudge and hurt herself. She may just need time to settle in with the new mares group? You could try a feed based calmer for a while - they work on some and not on others. Anything with Valerian in tends to work - but is banned in competition so you need to allow a withdrawal period. Some people swear by "Confidence EQ". I've not used it myself - but some on the yard are using it for the upcoming fireworks season. The short periods of turn out with you there until she settles. It might be worth moving her friend out of sight if you can?

What about trying to 'buddy her up' with one of the other mares. Is it possible to stable her next to, ride with, and turn out in a small high-fenced paddock for a while with another mare so that she makes friends?
I am presuming that she is not also stabled next to Ash, but if so then moving her away (preferably also out of direct line of sight) might also help 'wean' her from him.
