Usually have mares but noticed yesterday my gelding who rarely exposes his private parts, was showing off a very infected and sore looking penis. Dry yellow puss and possible scabbing/dry old blood was present and it looked so alarming I wanted to call the vet. A lady on the yard said it is quite normal but I decided to dilute some very weak hibiscrub and give it a clean but he never exposes himself so all I could do was attempt to clean in the sheath. I have also noticed a couple of times that his sheath can look slightly swollen but not quite sure what to do as I always thought their private parts would be best left alone. Thanks for any help in advance.

I bought a horse with an infected sheath we tried cleaning it ourselves but it was beyond our skills with out help.
The vet sedated washed with mild hibiscrub pulling the whole penis out ( made my eyes water to watch .
It was a disgusting mess but a good clean made the horse much more comfortable and we got an antibiotic cream to apply after he got the idea it gave relief from discomfort he was very complaint and dropped the lot out at the drop of a hat. He also had oral antibiotics and Danilon for a week.
I think I would get the vet to take a look and got a scary lecture from the vet about the awful things neglected sheaths can cause.

agree get the vet theres no point in you poking about and making it worse when he might need antibiotics anyway and doing it sedated is so much kinder

Definitely get the vet out. Its taken 3 boxes of oral antibiotics, 2 tubs of cream, 2 sheath cleans and a sheath broth to get on top of my boys infection. Vet should take a swab before cleaning which will show the bacteria present. Lots of sheath infections/fly strike this year due to the weather x

Excessive cleaning of the sheath can also cause problems to as you can upset the natural ph/bacteria balance espically as you can never guarntee you can get it 100% dry

We have a pony who had infection in his sheath that can never be cured as there is excessive scar tissue from an infection at some point, When he has to have ti cleaned has to be done with kitche towel so that no moisture is left behind, and flies make it worse so we haev to get alot of prescrition cream of the vet atm but its managable just have to clean the gunk of his legs every day
