Sheepskin question -

I ride in a Bartl half pad under my saddlecloth which look stupid (but works much better - why do people do it the other way?) but they are agonisingly expensive to buy a spare one...

Has anyone ever cut their own pad from a full sheepskin? Like the type that are used as naff 1970's style lounge rugs?

Does this sound like a good or crap idea to you? I'm not sure if it'll all just be rubbish!

I just use a half pad - never have anything under it or over it - there is no need. I also have several as yes they are expensive - but they last years. I have sheepskin half pads from griffen nuumed, and Mattes which have lasted me about 5 years so far and still look fantastic. so they are well worth every penny and save a fortune long term.

Yes, you cna cut your own from a sheepskin rug or coat... if you can find one big enough. I would go for a sheepskin coat because you don't know what the rugs have been cured/tanned with. Some of them will have come from parts of the world where they aren't too fussy about what chemicals they chuck about. The ones I have made are from skins I have tanned myself. You simply have to prune it if it is too wooly.

To get the full benifit of sheepskin it needs to be next to the horses skin.
