Hi, I'm having a bit of a trip down memory lane and wondered if anyone knows of Sherman's Riding Stables. I used to ride there as a child in middle to late 1960's. I'm not even sure that the yard was called Sherman's but I remember it was owned by a Mrs Sherman. The yard was near to Friday Woods and we used to hack from the yard to the woods and back.

I no longer live in the area so don't know if it still exists - anyone know of it?

There are two riding stables that I know of around the Friday woods area.. Neither go by that name these days, though.

Can you describe the yard at all?

Hi, yes it was all very basic - the horses were not in loose boxes they were all in stalls. I remember they all wore headcollars with a rope attached which went through a wooden beam - on the rope below the beam was a wooden weight - Awful conditions really - I do remember the horses were very grumpy - not at all surprising really! :(

I remember a schooling area but it was just a circular dirt track - once you could do a reasonable rising trot you were able to go out hacking.

I've lost contact with my family and so can't get any more background information other than what I can remember - my memories are a bit vague. I believe the owner had a granddaughter who had an Arab gelding - she was the envy of the whole yard. I used to ride a horse called Topper who had a docked tail and sometimes a very irritable pony called Titch.
