God I don't know what goes on in the head of this horse! Anyway just a quick bit of BG info, I'm not jumping or competing her at the moment as feel she needed a break, will probably start jumping again in about 6 weeks time (then she's had 2 and a half months off from it) and we'll take it from there.

She's just had 2 weeks off, first because I was ill, then she had a random spot of heat in her leg for a couple of days which the vet saw and there was nothing wrong, then I went away. I hacked her out on Sunday with no problems what so ever, as enthusiastic as she has been ever since we started feeding her more. Yesterday I schooled her and she was very good, a little sticky in the corners near the end but she always does that, its like her little sign that she's getting tired so then I always just finish off on a good note quickly else she throws a tantrum - she doesn't have a very long concentration span. Then I hacked round for about 40 minutes/a hour just in walk back to the field as she was very sweaty as hasn't been clipped yet. Going up the drive she halted a couple of times and when we passed a track to go back to the yard she did a very small spin. I didn't think anything of it as she's not used to schooling then going for a hack.

I took her for a ride today, wow when I got on she actually stood still! But this was a little forebiding as usually she tries to leave the yard before you're in the saddle..Anyway, set off, when we reached a T, I went left, and right would be going quickly back to the field. She walked okay but felt a little backwards, I relaxed my reins thinking she would be okay though, and she did a little rear and spin. I spun her round in a couple of small circles, asked her to go on and she did. Then she was fine until we passed the next option with a place to go home where there repeated. This spoilt my mood a little so I decided just to go on a short ride not the longish one I had been planning as didn't feel like repeating this by every turning. So we had a trot and a canter, and she was very strong. This surprised me because when she was napping before she was never strong going away from home, but before I went away and she wasn't napping she was a little strong, but I like it that way [lol]

Anyway, so I decided to ride the long way back, so passed the shortest way to go home, in a direction of what could be a much longer ride..Behold Lacey didn't nap (before she would have). So I thought hmm..maybe my spinning worked so lets go further. We explored a path but it turned out to be a dead end so turned round and doubled back, but when we got back to the orginal track, I turned away from the direction of home, which was again fine with her. I explored a bit up there involving passing several ways of going home, and again, no napping. We went home (ridden about an hour at that point), and on the way home a car passed us, she had to wait for it to pass and got a bit silly and plunging a bit, so I made her wait then carried on. I branched off to trot up a steepish hill because there was an old gateway I wanted a quick look at, Lacey went up willingly enough, we passed it then passed a tree with those funny spikey shell things..I tried to get 1 but dropped it, so circled her to get it again.

This resulted in a rear (only small but on a steep hill it was scary) and tried to bomb off down the hill. I circled her to stop, then went back up to the tree to show her she just couldn't do that. Anyway carried on going home, passed a way to go home and she felt like she wanted to nap, so I quickly pushed her into a canter and she went and was rather strong. Pulled her up, and by the next path to go home I was gonna go, but nearing the corner she felt like she was planning to wizz down it very quickly so I couldn't make her go further. So I halted her which resulted in several rear/spin things until she listened, and then we went home..

I just don't understand, the only time when she's done this since is when we went on like a 4 hour hack and half way through she decided she had enough. Before when she wasn't getting enough energy from her feed she wasn't strong so it can't be that.

Fingers crossed it was just a bad day but any opinions?

I think you expect a bit too much from her by the sound of it, perhaps you should stick to shorter rides say, 40 min hacks instead of 1 hour+ ones. It sounds like she is telling you she's fed up, afterall they are creatures with a mind of their own. Coco doesn't nap like she does but he throws his head about on hacks and will be v v strong on the way home, or the way out, if he's not in the mood.

Lacey is only a baby really and when Coco was younger he used to get really fed up with us after say half an hour despite the fact he was resonably fit and not breaking a sweat, so we asked our y/o who was very experianced with young horses and she told us that in their mind they can get tired/fed up, if they aren't completely matured. This might make sence because everyone says welsh cobs mature much slower than other breeds - perhaps you should really lower the tone of your work with her, go on short sweet hacks until you feel she is really enjoying them, or whatever you feel appropriate to do with her. I hope you get through it, she has so much potential.

That really does make sense..Except the little point that the only time she's been napping was before when she wasn't being fed enough and all of a sudden today. She's very fit (but gets sweaty but she is very hairy right now, yay for clipping on friday), so she's used to going out for quite long rides especially as I'm addicted to going on picnic rides.

Hm..does give me something to think about though. Trying to piece it together..Hmm I suppose she'd nap on the start because she doesn't want to go on a long ride, starts enjoying it and then starts trying to get home asap because she gets fed up and tired. It does make sense, except why didn't she do this before I didn't feed her enough and in between giving her more food and now, the only time she's been going on short hacks was over the winter but then still a long (very long to make the most) hack at the weekend and she never napped.

Thanks ever so much, definatly given me something to think about

I'm not sure about that - I've never experianced one like her, but then again I'm not all that experianced lol.
Perhaps, as with her jumping, she has kinda been pushed over the edge and this is her way of saying give her a break? Obviously she should not be allowed to think her napping is acceptable behaviour because it isn't, but if that was what coco was doing I would just take a few steps back for him.
If she's napping she is clearly not enjoying it, but I don't know why she would have only recently started doing it if you have always done the same thing. I hope someone else will have some good ideas for you!

I'm not sure what you mean with pushing her over the edge? Do you mean like still riding her when she wasn't getting enough energy from her feed so it resulted in rearing ect? I'd agree with that and giving her a break, but then we hit the wall of her having been fine since the beginning of August until today, since we started feeding her more. If she wanted/needed a break, surely she'd have done it all along?

She's coming across the road on Friday to come in again at night, so I'll see if she naps there, she never napped there and then we'll probably be going on shorter rides (or soon will be anyway) as it gets dark quicker, so I can see if the problem goes whilst the rides get sorter due to less daylight to see if that theory is right.

Thanks

Sounds like she is taking the mick to me, could you get a more experienced rider to ride her out for you for a bit, it could give you more confidence in handling the problem, as it could get worse if you are feeling nervous.

Erm I'm not sure of how much an option that is..No one on my yard will ride her and she takes the complete pi$$ out of most people who sit on her (including me! I'm only just learning to ride her properly, she's very different to just about any other horse).

It doesn't really unnerve me, though it did that once because we were on quite a steep hill and I had visions of her rearing up, toppling over and us slipping down the hill like in The Horse Whisperer -laughs-
Thanks though, I might get my instructor to try if it persists though. It's a good idea though, thanks.

Sorry I've been useless but I really hope you can get her to enjoy herself again, and I hope you can enjoy your rides with her. Hopefully you will eventually find the answers to your problems and keep us posted on how she's going!

Sounds to me like the new food is kicking in. A huge number of behavioural problems can result from changes in diet. Think of the effect of spring grass!

You did exactly the right thing by insisting she wait/go a different way etc so she'll know she hasn't got away with anything. What are you feeding? perhaps you could give her a low-starch high fibre/protein feed such as a conditioning cube which shouldn't affect her energy but might just take the edge off her!
