Just wondering who much you yards charge a month for shetlands?

I was thinking about £20 a month would be fair per pony, as they don't eat much grass, take up much space etc, but my yard want £80 a month for 2 tiny ponies, think thats a bit of a joke. so just wondered what you guys are paying??

baring in mind I already have 2 horses there so they are getting a fair amount of money out of me as it is!!!

Sorry but a space is a space.
I would make no difference for a shetland/small welsh than I would a 16hh horse.
Might eat slightly less grass, but its a space that cannot be let to another bigger horse once given to your shetland.
They are a business when all is said and done.

£10 per week at our yard, think thats pretty resonable, plus what Joeanne says above, they're still taking space, irrelevant of their size.

Agree totally.

Shetland pays the same rent as any other horse.
All the stables are 12x12 and the shettie has his own private paddocks, he is not in the big fields with the rest which if anything, is more of a pain for the YO!

For me it would depend on if they were being kept seperatly, as I'm thinking they would need a starvation paddock? Also are they coming in? If so, are they using a space they couldn't use for anything else? Plus what do they normally charege? £80 for the 2 a month isn't bad, when you hit a certain number it can be cheaper to rent privately.

I know shelties are a bit mad when it comes to fencing, but they could share a stable and then only need a tiny paddock, I always objected to paying same for my 15.00 as for those with a !6.2 eating elephant like haynets and making the fields a mess with their huge feet. The place I was thinking of had three or four sizes of stable at different prices but hay was same price.
I don't think the price is totally out of order, but with so many horses you might be better looking for another yard or farm situation.

Sorry, agree with everyone else.

If it makes you feel any better, our yard charges £20 pw for grass livery OR for stable/grazing for EACH animal - regardless of the size pony. They charge the same for grass keep as they do for those having a stable too, arguing (quite rightly) that 24/7/365 grass management is time consuming and expensive to provide. Also, the littlies often need extra management and fencing to provide the 'starvation' paddocks they need for much of the year (our grazing is very good).

Hate to say it, but £10pw/pony is a good rate. Honestly! :)

And having just seen what neck of the woods you are from, you are NEVER going to get grazing for £5 per week per pony!!!!
Grazing is at an all time premium in that area!

You need to think beyond 'it's small, it eats less grass and takes up less space'. Each animal's contribution towards the yard mortgage/lease, electric, water, phone bill, non-domestic rates, insurance, fencing and grazing maintenance, poo-picking, weed clearance, yard maintenance, ditch cleaning, advertising, yard owners profit, has to be the same for everyone.

If it's grass only livery I would expect to pay the same as every other grass livery. If you are getting a stable, then it would be the same as everyone else's.

I currently have a clydesdale and have had shetlands i wouldn't expect to pay any differnt for either of them a space is a space at the end of the day :D

Well I only pay 65 for the big horses and that includes 2 stables, which are only any good for storage! The shetties are in the corner of a small paddock, which was already set up with sheep fencing! The farmer doesn't do any weeding or rolling, harrowing of the fields, or hasn't repaired any fencing in the 2 yrs I've been here! I do everything that needs doing! They won't be coming in at night! We have 2 field shelters so they can go in there if they need to?

I'm the only livery here, so had to get something to keep my two company as they don't want the hassle of running a livery yard!

I used to be on a working farm and the farmer charged 10quid a month for the sheltands there, so guess they were just lucky there!

Will just have to take them home!

While it maybe possible to get a cheaper rate, I haven't come across a yard that does, the Shire owners pay the same as the ponies.

YO's make a little extra if they sell the hay and feed on the big horses, but if the amount of grazing needed were to make a difference then horses on box rest or stabled at night would pay less than those out 24/7.
Or the showing people would pay more for washing facilities and water.

A space is a space.

It depends on the yard and whats on offer- been to one yard where they had a pony rate and a horse rate- the ponies had smaller stables and smaller fields so it was fair, but at another yard all stables were 12x12 and all fields were approximately the same size, so everyone paid the same- this didn't include any feed or bedding so the owners saved/spent more there depending on their horse/pony and how they chose to keep it.

My ponies are at home now but when I used to be on a livery yard it was £5 a week less for my Shettie than for my bigger ponies, she got the same size stable as the others and I supplied the extra elec fencing required to stop her doing a houdini from the field :)

I'm in Basingstoke and it would be £65 a month per pony with no stable at my yard so £80 for the two sounds very reasonable.
