Hello, i was wondering if anyone could be so kind as to help me out a little. I recently met and elderly lady in the village where i keep my foals she is a lovely lady with two shetland ponies, her granddaughter bought the ponies in the summer but as it got colder she has lost interest and left the ponies at her grandmothers house and she can no longer look after them (she is 80 with very bad arthritis)so she would like to sell them. She knows nothing at all about ponies and her granddaughter has said she no longer wants them, she has been feeding them bread and crackers, they are both 7 yrs unbroken registered shetland ponys one mare and one gelding my question is she would like to sell them and i have offered to help but have no idea what they are worth if anything. Any advice would be gratefully received.

Please don't let her feed them bread. I have seen a horse die from impacted colic caused by his owner feeding him bread

Unbroken they won't be worth much but if they are registered that is better obviously. Where abouts are you? I have a spare stable that could be filled by another Shettie

Thank you for the link will have a look. I have told her bread is not good for them and i have taken her a nice bale of hay this evening they thought it was brilliant, we are in north lincolnshire

There's a pair for sale on Horsequest, also Horsemart may have some for sale to get an idea of price. I would have thought they're worth £200 to £300 each if not a little more - depending on how well handled they are.
Such a shame, thanks god you're around.....

It will depends alot on how they are bred if they are registered as to how much they are worth and what state they are in.

Perhaps you could email a breeder and ask for some advice.

I think Varkie on here is a shetland breeder..

get granny to just give them hay, shetties dont require much! ment to live in the shetland isles!!! as to value not much as they are unbroken, but would make good companions to knowledgable people who wont let them get too fat! or someone might be able to break then to drive or ride.depends on temperaments. some are lovely some are horrors! (as with all species!)

thanks for all the replys, i will get some pic's taken tomorrow and try and put them on here and i'll ask to see passports for breeding thanks everyone

Around here you could buy them for £150 before the recession really bit. I paid £300 for mine but he is a very rare colour. To be honest in this climate, unless they are show quality, I suspect she may have to give them away.
