Hi everyone looking for some advice, I’ve a standard Shetland pony who I’ve discovered has lice this morning, its November and rather chilly right now his coat is THICK when I say thick he looks like a Yeti. I’m wondering what my best option for it is I’ve been told to shave him and bath him (hot water in stable to prevent a draft) in a special shampoo and then use the powder and rug him up so he won’t feel the cold.
I’ve never ever had any dealings with lice and I’m not even sure where they have come from. Could anyone give me any advice?
Lice and deosect isn’t an option with his thick coat on at the moment it takes me a massive amount of time to find his skin using my hands and he doesn’t have the cleanest of coats (I’ve owned him just over a month).

Thank you

Thank you for replying, I feel like the deosect wouldn’t reach his skin I can’t even express the thickness of his coat :( we will deosect him when clipping him just don’t want to make him freeze is all it’s so cold right now. Thank you again

If you have a stable and ample rugs he will be fine being clipped, and may even thank you for it. Those shetland coats are made for shetland. I generally have to clip mine in some form in winter just to make them comfortable.

Thank you for replying, his cost is very thick and I do think it is too thick for where we are as relatively sheltered, we have a stable yes and going to buy medium weight rugs and a stable rug tomorrow as only have rain sheets. I do think he would be happier without a coat I just worry he feels the cold at first in the month I’ve had him he has gained so much more so I think it will be quick to grow in again. Should o take his legs off too as very hairy?

Id leave the legs unless they are itchy too, purely cause clipping legs so low to the floor is a pain in the..back :p

Haha I like your humour! I’m quite short too so I’m not sure it would bother me haha! I just wondered if it would be ok to clip legs if they have lice in them too? (Haven’t checked that area).

Yes it would be totally fine, as long as he is stabled on cold nights. I left legs on one and took them off on another and she is doing fine (in fact the swelling in her bad hocks has been going down)

I think I’ll leave his legs on but clip the insides? The warm bit and see how we get on them should I bath him what is best to use when he is short? Thank you for the advice I appreciate it so much! X

If i ever have skin issues i bathe in tea tree oil (diluted of course) or botanica cleanse. Then lather them in a flea/lice powder.
