I might be naughty and buy myself a standard Shetland.
Just wondering on what size they make as in I see 8hh-10hh advertised; and how they were for breaking. I have never had a shetty before and the urge is getting fierce to have one.

Boyfriend has a 5yo daughter who has gone pony mad ( not my fault at all hehe) and you can prob see my trail of thought here.

However primarily shetty is for my enjoyment and as a companion and pet.

Tell me all :)

Shetland are measured in inches generally and the max height for a 'true to breed type' standard shetland is 42 inches. I find shetlands very clever and quick learners, breaking in shouldn't be a problem if you're small enough.

Not necessarily great first ponies as they are naturally wide for little legs to get round and they can be quite strong and opinionated BUT they are great fun!

Choose the pony carefully from a reputable stud and you could have a good quality show animal if that's your thing.

Go for it!! We had 2 standards and they were lovely. They were cheap to keep and very hardy and real characters.

My son had his when he was 3yrs old and it was 9.3hh so lasted him a few years. We then inherited a friends as she had lost her grazing so had two of the little lovlies running around!

Ours was an angel too handle and ride, and would be sensible even if he hadn't been sat on for a couple of mnths. The other one was a little sharper but still well behaved if kept on the lead rein.

The only thing too watch for is their weight - we kept ours in a vitually bare paddock and they were still little tubbies!

If you weren't at the other end of the country I would have had the perfect pony for you! Lol! Sod's Law!

If you get a good 41"-42" chunky Shetland they will last you a life time!

Rehome Pudding !!

I know when I asked them about breaking my companion that I loan from them they were happy for me to do it if I wanted to but at my own time/ expense.

I'm sure they'd have plenty of others if she wouldn't work for any reason.

She's very cute but the only colour shetlands can't be is spotted so either she's not a purebred shetland or she's not spotted. Depends on whether a pure bred is particularly important to you

my daughter was bought aged 1 week old a year old shettie. proper full on shettie
broke him to ride and drive and by heck he was a good un and a little ***** lol. many fun times with daughter and him at shows but he taught my daughter how to ride (happily drop a shoulder then stop as daughter picked self up out dirt to get back on ) and in show ring he would "forget"how to canter. she soon learnt how to laugh when it alll goes wrong. Little ******* but love them :)

I have a standard Shetland on loan. Hes 42" or 10.2hh, not as wide as you'd think either. he is 22 this year and will be doing pony club and some shows this year with my 6, nearly 7 year old son :)

Here he is being ridden today after being clipped this morning
