I think shetlands have great little characters, I should I have 8 of them, well apart from one who likes to pull the posts up of the elec fence and let him and his field mates out. My 17h tb adores the two mini girls.
I've known some evil Shetlands over the years but we have three mini Shets and they are the most docile, easy going characters. None of them has ever bitten or kicked, they all come to call and they are very affectionate. The 18-y-o was gelded just before he came to us two years ago and he is my favourite, he hasn't got a mean bone in his body.
We have a small Shetland stud, and in defence of the breed, shetlands are not nasty in the least - totally the opposite, they actually have absolutely fantastic temperaments. What they are, is highly intelligent, meaning they learn (good and bad) fast. The only bad shetland is one created by people - either by being abused, or by being treated like a dog. Treat a shetland like a 16hh horse, and you'll never have a problem. Treat it like a pet or a dog, and you'll very quickly have a problem pony. Anyone who doubts the temperament of shetlands is invited to visit our stud, and meet all of ours. From foals to broodmares, to entire colts to our stallion, the temperaments are exceptional.
In addition, it's not so much that the majority are intentionally escape artists, so much as that the fencing for most paddocks is rigged up for larger horses, and to shetland eyes isn't much of a barrier - and with electric fencing, their coats tend to be so thick that they just don't feel it. Finally, they are intelligent animals, and if they are just left in a paddock without playful company (if they like to play), or enough space to keep their minds occupied, they get creative, and they will find ways to entertain themselves.
Are these the pictures of evil animals? I think not. These are just a handful I could post pics all day, showing how wonderful they are.
and my friend breeds and shows shetlands and has over 20 atm...2 stallions, mares, fillies and colts..not a nasty one among them. All well mannered and kind
This is my son with his shettie, he broke him to drive last winter and shows him through the summer.
I honestly don't think he knows that he is a shetland!!!
