What are peoples thoughts to this? As i have a very stressed out horse all the time, he is on magnesium which has chilled him out, he has had all the usual checks, but im getting to the point where i cant give him what he needs;purely as its because i simply do not know.

i am toying with selling him as i am questioning my own knowlege i dont think i know enough to help him through it, even though i have two youngsters i have raised and one of which i have broken, but this one... mentally isnt ready!

he is 4 years, welsh, very skittish, spooks at his own feet some times, was badly miss treated (starved and quite probably beaten being how head shy the poor lad is) fast movements scare him, loud noises scare him, smallest of touches he flinches. I have changed his diet, i have tried to school, tried pirrelli, tried a mix of traditional and pirelli stuff, tried join up (kind of worked but not good enough)

i am now thinking of this route (madly even considered a psycic for him! I love him to bits, he is a right dude when he isnt scared and is really loving...im actually finding it hard to admit i cant give him what he needs as im terrified some one else thinks this as a few people i know (and love) have said have him shot as he has had the horse beaten out of him! (obviously i bite at them) but i do wonder if this is the case, and perhaps he just needs to have the tension eased out (i mean if any one has had a deep tissue massage should know what i mean by it does help!)

ANY ideas are welcome. appart from shooting! im at the end of my teather! there is only so much arena surfing a girl can do! xxx

Try a reputable psychic person, could help you no ends when in doubt try it, it could save you from selling :)

As much as you can I personally would try and keep him, you know him the best and as you say he had a bad start. I had a horse that was very much like this and he only came to me as no one could so anything with him, he was beanded dangerous and left in a field. It took a lot if hard work (and help from hos fiels companions!) but hes come right and is generally a fab boy. He is on Hilton Herbs calm and collected, it has made a huge difference!

If you can afford to give it a try I would. My connemara can get his knickers in a twist over nothing sometimes, and though I technically don't know what I'm doing, just massaging his back and neck and giving him a wither scratch does calm him down alot. Could you have a go yourself first?

As for the psychic, I know someone who was incredible sceptical about it all, thought it was a load of cr*p but used it I think as a last resort (if I remember correctly) and could not believe the difference. So to be honest, whether it was actuly the psychic or not, if the result is the horse is better, who cares?!

I hope you manage to get him sorted and good luck x

ive not heard of this? i started the magnesium on advise from my yard manager, which is doing the trick, but i am an open book! so i will be looking up the hilton herbs see what its about, i am also still trying to get weight on this boy so the food he is on is high energy (barly rings, build up conditioning cubes, and condition mix with condition chaff) as i have found this mixture is doing him well and finally getting weight on him, as he was still quite ribby and hippy when i got him even though my friend and the lady before her did fab to get weight back on him!

sadly he was starved to the point even a rain sheet was too heavy for him and he would collaps so doing research to try and find a feed which will do what the above is doing but with less in it! x

I recently did a weekend Masterson Method course. I was amazed at how the horses responded and how they relaxed ( most of them) using this technique. I'd expected it to be a more physical relief method but was became very clear was that some horses had issues which were more emotional than physical. One horse in particular who had not been at the livery very long had a huge release; shook all over stretched, groaned and then lay down and gave the saddest baby whinny I've ever heard. He stayed down for ages and slept. I cried as did a few others who stood and watched it happen. It's worth looking up his methods and there are quite a few videos on YouTube of him working.

PS. Pm me if you want more details. I can if you wish talk you through some if the techniques which I find very good at making the horse relax. X

If you are feeding him that every day no wonder he is overreactive, I would turn him away until he has put the weight on naturally now he is over the worst then start again once he has relaxed and got condition on, you should then be able to start work off grass next spring, just do basic handling for now.

i tried this also as i know its a high energy feed, he has been turned away for the best part of 6 months; i literally did nothing with him and only bothered with my other two, so far and hasnt done him any good, to the point when you have to bring him in (farrier) he is hard work and spends most the time on his back legs, so had to go back to daily handling and only gets this feed once a day and its a small feed, although i have just read up about some other feeds that may help, and just purchased a tub of the calm and collected.

as i said i am an open book, and researching things as we speak, cause the more i think about it the more i want to keep him under my wing for now. I have also messaged a local trainer so fingers crossed i can get an hour a week with her at least! x

If you have tried leaving him out and he got worse without daily work it may be worth going the other way for a short while, keeping him in and having him rely on you for everything, possibly just for a few days or over a weekend so he does not get too stressed, work with him several times each day so he becomes more focused and gradually accepting that you are going to be doing things he finds hard then gets a reward by going back to his box for hay and a treat.
I worked with a Welsh cob mare years ago that was completely wild, rounded up from the mountain, sent to the sales, then to my yard for handling and breaking, she had not been beaten but was extremely nervous and could not even be
caught in her box, she quickly came round but was not turned out for weeks as would have been impossible to get near once loose.

i have been secretly wishing for winter to get the chance for this, its hard as he is very reliant of my cob, i might try bring him in again on his own to try this see what he does, as it could well be what he needs (i have been reluctant to try this as i dont want him hurting him self) he was a bit like it him self in the box when i first got him, and he was terrible with his feet, but i found instead of trying to pick his feet up, i now just tap the back of his foot to lift, saves my back too!

he is very clever so i hope the couple of suggestions given does help him use that clever brain of his so he can do some work as he would look fantastic ridden! would be a shame to be a companion all his life! x
