Shingles (human)

Ooh, poor you! I felt a bit rough for a few days, then got the rash, just one line on my side. Very painful, couldn't bear the touch of anything for a few days, then wore off and gone in 10 days, which is quite quick, I think. Try going to the homeopathic section of your chemist and getting some Rhus Tox pillules, take three a day for 3 days and this should help reduce the symptoms. good luck!

Hi Teds Mum, I have it as I write.......

I am sure your GP has explained it all to you...its a member of the herpes virus and more particularly, the chicken pox virus.
I'm that rare person who has no natural immunity to CP and have had it 7 times....2 years ago it morphed into shingles. This is the second time I've had it in the form of shingles and I fully sympathise. My GP has given me some drugs that you take 5 x day and I have to say they are very effective and fast, too! Try not to stress as this can make it worse and I know you most likely feel flu'y and head-achey but try to get as must rest as you can and wherever your lesions are, please try not to touch them and then touch another part of your body...you don't want lesions in your eyes. Its contagious by direct contact so don't kiss anyone!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
It will vary as to how long this goes on...I am on day 3 and feeling loads better since starting the course of drugs yesterday am. It might last as long as 2 weeks depending on the severity of the attack. I know it hurts...just try to switch off as much as you can, relax and rest.
Good luck and get well soon.

my rash in under my arm - by my armpit - went to the doctors and had it confirmed - so got tablets to take 5 times a day! can people catch it easily have been told to stay away from elderly and children, and pregnant people...x

yes thats exactly what I have been told to do...thanks for your advice - hope you get well soon also...x

Hi....no , people can't actually catch shingles from you, but if they have never had chickenpox ( or have no immunity to chickenpox) then they can get c'pox.

You have to really be in close physical contact though.

Hope you feel better soon:(

ooooh under your arm? I am sure thats uncomfortable...!! Be a bit cautious with your deodorant if you use a roll on....bear in mind that the virus will then be on the roller ball. After this attack is over you may want to buy a new one and abandon the other one.....or you stand a chance of reinfecting esp if you shave (I know, too much information!!) and get a nick...the virus could start up again although it actually lives in the nerve endings behind your ear, beleive it or not. At present brushing my hair at the back of my head is enough to make me yelp as my lesions are confined to my face and the inside of my mouth.
Last time I had a line of five on my back...oh the joys of being spotty............
You'll be fine, just try to keep your sense of humour, get rest...catch up on your reading, clean a bridle and take sick leave.....!!!...and get well soon.

I had it about 6 months ago - but I think I must have had a mild version because everyone was saying how painful it would be but mine wasn't too bad - just rather hot and tender.
I took the tablets the doc gave me and it cleared up in approx 5-7 days.
Doc said when he had it it wasn't too painful either.
I had my rash down the side of my neck and across the top of my shoulder.

I had what I thought was shingles a few months ago - although I never went to the doctors and it went in about 2/3 weeks, so not sure if it was. Started with small rash around my middle, which went into raised and very painful lesions - but didnt feel unwell, and other than one night when I couldnt sleep as they kept itching/hurting, it wasnt as bad as I'd expected, and hasnt recurred.

When I couldnt sleep as ther lesions were itching every time I got warm in bed, I resorted to horse remedies, and put a cloth bandage round me, and covered it with one of those cold bandages for horses, and it really did the trick!

Hope your goes as quickly as mine...

thanks all...I use spray deodorant so not so bad...mine arent painful as such just itchy and its so hard not to scratch so therfore burns/tingles slightly after a got scratching session!! lol! I feel quite unwell with it also - sore throat, feverish and achey...and generally run down hence why I am staying in on a friday eve! thanks all for your advice... x:)

I had it once in my 30s after a very stressful busy time at work. Stopped for holiday and immediately felt really tired, then got a funny pain in/on my upper leg but couldn't see anything. All the nerve endings read everything wrong though - I kept thinking the inside of my jeans were somehow scratching the surface of my leg, and if I put anything on my leg (like a magazine to read) even through clothing it felt like it was a block of ice was touching it. Then about a week later the big spots appeared in a chain from my hip down to the inside of my thigh and I realised what it was. Went to doc but too late for any drugs as I think you have to take anti virals before spots appear. So just smeared spots with calamine lotion and tried not to scratch them...have been left with a few pale spot scars though but nothing awful.

My mum had shingles it a while ago and she was in a bit of pain. For her, it's kind of been a background thing and it has come back a few times.
Hope you feel better soon xx
