Just heard on TV that there is an oversupply of shipping containers in the UK and they are available fairly cheaply. Was wondering if anyone had taken advantage of this to adapt and use to house equines and, if so, how successful it has been.

They make horrible noises in the wind :p Admittedly the ones on our yard are rusty and old. I could imagine they'd be fab for storage, they're very waterproof.

There was one on ebay last night that was turned into 3 stables looked ok but was limited to 8 ft wide so all stables were really pony boxes but still looked ok, they are excellent for storage, but if used for stables will really need to think about drainage and coating the floor to protect from the acid in the urine.
Sounds like something to look into.
I suppose they would class as mobile too which may help with planning :O)

Don't think they are as cheap as suggested. SiL buys them (ok so he does buy the better ones) to use for rented storage and the price has tripled in 18 months plus he is having difficulty finding any not at the end of their life.

Using them as stables would be like microwaving a pony in summer and freezing him in winter unless you insulated and lined them. Probably not worth all the hassle.

We use ours as a more secure storage (although don't keep tack in it), it's been broken in to twice though when we used to have a generator kept in there and certain 'members of our society' fancied getting their hands on them. I think they'd be ok to use as a shelter maybe but would have thought now wide enough for use as a normal sized stable. Plus, we have issues with ours and it's roof getting holes in (rusting) and leaking when it rains!

I have one as a feed store not impressed the metal eventually goes rusty and rots away and one year we had rats eat through the floor really wouldn't recommend to be totally honest.
