Ive been looking everywhere for a middleweight combo turnout rug that won't break the bank! I've narrowed it down to wearherbeeta or shires. I've found a good deal on the shires one but don't have any experience with them as combos. I have a gelding who was gelded late and has quite a neck on him so I need something that won't strangle him! Are the necks spacious?

I have shires heavy(ish) turnouts- the necks are the roomiest I've ever seen on a combo- bigger even than WB, the only thing I'll say is shires tend to come up a little shorter than WB- I have a 6'3 for my boy which used to fit him fine, but now he sometimes needs a 6'6 for certain brands- shires being one of them, whereas he can still fit ok in his WB 6'3 rugs, so if you're in between sizes I'd go up one, but if you always use a size then stick with it- if that makes any sense! :p

I just bought one for my welsh who has a very thick neck and his previous combo rubbed his mane but this new shires has a really roomy neck and looks like it will be nice and cosy this winter :)

I got some of these thinking they would 'do for now' as a cheap rug, well, I actually really like them, theyre a decent rug.

Would say the necks are more spacious on the shires.I have used sire tempest combo which is a budget rug ,on a light/show type pony. Fitted perfectly but have had the more pricier shires and def. roomier,as to be expected you get what you pay for.W/beeta combos Ilike ,the tail flaps are generous and really keeps their bums dry in winter storms.Great rugs too.

I love Shires rugs - they fit my gypsy cob really nicely, and I've bought a set for my new Irish cob. So far, I've never had any rubs, and I often use them as stable rugs too so they can be on for a fair bit of the winter!

Plenty of room for broad shoulders and necks :) I have a lightweight WB and love it - but can't bring myself to pay that much for any new rugs when the Shires one fit nicely for about half the price... Though as someone else has said - the Shires tail flaps aren't that massive on most of the rugs.

My welsh x has a high set, thick neck and his shires rug fits beautifully. He's a bit of an odd shape, a lot of other rugs end up sliding backwards and pulling on his shoulders but there hasn't been so much as a rubbed hair the last two winters :)
