I recently bought a 4ft9" Stormbreaker turnout rug with hooks for a hood and purchased the matching hood in their smallest size (small). The rug fitted OK but the hood in no way should be sold for little ponies. It was about 8-10 inches too long and way too deep.

I sent an email to Shires complaining that I had been mis-sold the rug as I believe a rug with hooks for a hood should have a hood available from the same company, matching the rug that would fit that sized pony.

Shires told me that I should not have used the hood (I had no choice, pony is hunter clipped and it was freezing cold) and that I should have bought a hood from elsewhere that did fit my pony.

Sorry, but my pony is in no way out of proportion for him to be 4.9 long and still fit this hood, he would had to have had the neck of a 14.2! (11.2 welsh a).

Anyway, I just wanted to warn all of you with little ones not to buy this rug or if you buy this rug do not buy it wanting to use it with a Shires hood.

I'm just about to purchase a shires mediumweight rug for our pony. She also takes a 4'9" in Shires rugs. I always find the half neck ones better for little ponies. Her current heavyweight shires half neck comes a good way up her neck anyway. On the bigger ponies half neck rugs dont seem to come so far up.

Would the place you purchased the neck cover from refund it? When we bought a neck cover for our heavy cob it wouldnt even do up but the tack shop was happy to refund??
