Well, I am not kidding you, my partner and friends and I went riding today and a bl**dy Schnook flew over us (me on my boy) at a ridiculously low altitude(??) - just above the trees so we estimate about 30 - 50 foot max off the ground and I was terrified my boy would bolt but nothing, not even a twitch, we were so so proud of him, so I think he is definitely bombproof (we all said it anyway). The other day we had idiotic kids doughnutting and handbrake turning around us, again I was terrified and him?? Nothing! There is definitely something to be said for keeping them so hairy with their manes and forlocks that I think it stops them from seeing

Well done your lad - my old mare is scared by low flying birds, let alone helicopters

Very brave boy. I had a similar experience last year, and was worried my mare was going to bolt - we were on a nasty rough stone track with a ploughed field next to it - but bless her she just danced on the spot. She was terrified tho, and although we have loads of planes and helicopters over our yard, she saw another chinook last week (luckily nowhere near as low) and just froze, poor thing.
I know they have a job to do, but the low flying is just so scary for a lot of horses.

Our yard is right next to an airfield (1 field between menage and runway). I've been riding in the school a few times when planes have taken off and I've also had a Chinook land while I've been riding and we have a Vulcan Bomber which has taken off while I've been riding. I did jump off for that one though! Not that it bothered my horse

I think a lot of the time the horses are scared because we are expecting them to be, therefore tense up/grab the reins etc. Horses don't have predators in the air so wouldn't normally be too worried about things from above. Well done for staying calm

I saw quite a few of them yesterday - was watching the news last night about the afghanistan/helicopter issue and thought maybe they were being sent off there?

An air ambulance landed in the field next to me on Sunday, and at my old yard one crashed in the field...

I'm doomed

What a good boy.
My old yard was on the edge of Salisbury Plain and we used to get them flying really low over the fields. My horse didn't bat an eyelid.
I now keep him on a main road just by a recycling plant. The other morning I mistimed it and went out just as all the lorries were leaving. Boo was a star and just marched happily past a whole row of lorries as if they weren't there. When it comes to stray crisp packets or dodgy looking blades of grass - well that's another story

i live in a very remote rural area and it s very busy flight path for army fighter jets, helicopters, and the huge Hercules aircrafts, im very lucky as my horse does not bother at all with them , when im out riding the jets and helicopters are actually flying below me, as we live 1500ft above sea level ,

You weren't in North Devon by any chance were you OP! I was poo picking our field this morning, heard a very loud sound and looked up to see a large Chinook heading for us, luckily it wasn't majorly low but it certainly stopped my boys in their tracks for a couple of seconds!!!
