I got an amazing opportunity last week to loan a friends Eventer for the summer for something fun to play with...i asked my yard manager, where i keep my pony currently on part livery, how much it would cost for straight grass livery and was shocked to hear that plain grass livery was £25 pounds a week!!!! and that's on a decreased rate because I have two horses with him!
I couldn't believe it!
Is this the going rate for grass livery at the minute, and i'm just out of touch, or is this a rip off???

I will add i get tackroom space, use of walker and outdoor school included, but that's all.....

£25 per week in the summer, this includes an emergancy stable if needed, there is always a spare.
Winter is £35 because they put hayledge out in the field for them.
Its the same for a stable tbhm £25 livery a week, extra £10 a week if you use the hayledge.

well i'm glad that somebody else is on the same! i was concerned i was being ripped!
trying the horse today so fingers crossed i'll like it!

£15 a week at work but the grass livery is situated off site so you'd have to hack to the yard to use the school.

Does seem roughtly the going rate in my area, but as always depends on where in the country you are, as you will find some on her pay loads lesss and some pay more.
I would be happy with £25 a week grass livery

cor, really. I only pay £20 a week for my stable and grass and the school. I guess you're somewhere posher than me :)

My yard charges £50 a week grass livery, which seems to be quite cheap for this area :(

I want to move to where you guys are! Room for another one on any of your yards? :D

£1/day in West Devon where I am, £2/day with stable!
Pay extra for school indoor or outdoor, it really is very cheap and excellent facilities.
Only downside is the fencing is abominable....

£10 a week good grazing with free access to open barns. Yard with water, electric, stables, tack room/feed room/storage. Grass school, fab hacking, close to good equestrian venues.

We've got 15 quid a week for DIY livery, stable, winter and summer turnout, plus lami turnout if needed (our Cushings girl is currently in her own little turnout behind her stable :)) indoor, outdoor, good hacking on and off road...water (hose and baths), electric and own pallet for storage of hay and straw.
We have to pay extra for our hay/straw, use of the horse walker and lessons - YO has a jumping field too, but I think we get it pretty good! Yard is also in a good condition, good fences, stables etc!

That's about the going rate around here too, been quoted 20 per week with no stable and no facilites. It's generally around 25 per week for grazing and stable, with straw and hay extra in winter. There's cheaper but it tends to be a bit on the rough side and the more expensive yards tend to be less full.

its about £25 a week round here with stable and facilities, some charge extra for hay/haylage, some dont. I pay £100 a month to rent a field for summer grazing just down from my yard and i have 2 horses and 1 shettie on it. prety big piece of grazing to. She rent them out in sections and its £25 per section. i have four sections. i used to have two sections and just pay £50 a month ;-) But have grown in the number of horses since ;-)

If you want to negotiate cheaper board say that you'll forgo the tackroom, use of school and the walker. Maybe pay for school and walker as and when?

Factor in taxes, rates, insurance, electricity, general yard maintenance, repairs and replacements then field maintenance, price of gas for vehicle to harrow, top, roll fields (the harrow, the roller, the topper) and school etc it all adds up - I don't think you are getting a bad deal all told.

Most livery yards are run as a business and make precious little profit as it is, I am sorry and don't mean to be offensive at all, but why do people think that it should be cheap as chips and YO's shouldn't make a little bit of money, possibly to clothe and feed themselves and pay the mortgage?

I think that is fairly reasonable - Enfys is quite right, plus you have use of some nice facilities there. Horse are expensive aren't they? Blimmin' things. Rabbits are much cheaper. And you can eat them if you want to.

If you think about it, £25 a week is 'only' £3.50 per day + 50p over.........same as some spend on their lunch, much less than parking a car for a few hours etc etc

There is always someone charging less, but like Enfys says, most YO's charge to try not to lose money.......... :)

If you compare 1970s rates to now - my mum was paying £5pw for grass livery - with an added £1 per night for a stable if it was needed for emergencies which included bedding. (no proper school - just a grass paddock, great hacking & communal tackroom for all 35 liveries, of which 30 were out 24/7)

Fast forwards to now and what would those figures be if you added inflation?

We pay 50p/w,+extra for hay,+extra if somene feed him in case we need it,+30(per night, done it once!)for stable with bed and hay.But unlimited use of all facilities, and great hacking just on the doorstep.+extra if i use my RI.

well i managed to negotiate a second horse for free...i said i would change onto DIY with my current boy and have the new one on grass which would work out to be paying the same as i do now, so he just said have the second horse for free! bare in mind my YO is my OH's dad!

and we are in Leicester for those who were wondering!

although i am very surprised to hear how much grass livery is over the country! I think i must get a pretty good deal with part livery for £70 a week with mucking out, rug changes, turn out and bring in, putting on walker, use of school, walker, tack room (taking up enough space for 2 people :D) and exercise if i need! And we have space on the yard! haha!

It looks like Devon is the place to move :D
