Horse was supposed to have a full set on friday, farrier had 12 on our yard booked in for some reason and had another job the same afternoon, said he'd give me a ring monday and come sort her out then instead. Fair enough she only had a tiny crack in front foot and her hinds sounded a tad loose, nothing major that couldn't wait until after the weekend.

Come today, the crack has turned into a chunk sheared off her foot and there's a sharp nail sticking up out of the missing chunk. Hind shoes are hanging off. I rang farrier several times on monday and again this morning, no reply. Phoned another farrier, a regular at the pub where I work and a good friend who has helped me out before, no reply as yet.

What on earth can I do to this front shoe? I'm terrified she's going to catch herself on the nail that's sticking out as it's very sharp. I can't pull it out myself (have tried!). Am considering some kind of elaborate duct tape wrappping but don't know if this will do more harm than good.

I'd prob put some cotton wool over it and wrap it on with bandge tape until you can get someone to comeout...better him looking a bit daft than getting hurt!

If the nail's on the outside she's not likely to catch herself. If it's on the inside she might.

I would keep her in until you can get the farrier out. You could try wrapping the foot in vetwrap or duck tape, or a poultice boot, or in a nappy with duck tape over it like you would with an abcess.

Vetwrap it. That's what my farrier said to do as a temporary fix when one of mine twisted a shoe with nails everywhere.

Happy Birthday

Had to sort F's out the other day. Pliers and a hammer (don't jump on me, I know I'm not a farrier but it was either that or he gouged his other leg on it) got the offending nail out.

Hope you get it sorted soon x

Ask a farrier to take them all off. They might not have time to do the full shoeing, but loose shoes can cause a lot of damage. When your regular farrier finally gets back in touch, ask him to teach you how to remove shoes and buy some pullers. I'm sooooo gald I learnt this valuable skill - I've used it more than once on my pony and other horses.

Thankyou for the happy birthdays - it's looking like a more promising birthday now! Farrier #2 rang back and is coming out at 3.30 this afternoon, bless his heart. Had the bright idea of sticking a big blob of blu tack on the offending nail and sticking some duct tape over that so she doesn't catch herself until he gets there (it's on the inside edge). Fingers crossed he will have time to do a full set so I can have a long relaxing birthday ride as I promised myself last week.

Naturally, I will ask him to show me - YO offered the use of tools etc. to try and get it off but I wouldn't attempt it without knowing properly how. I tried to get the single nail out with a pair of pliers but I'm not strong enough

Ask your farrier to teach you how to remove shoes so that, if something similar happens again, you can safely remove a shoe yourself.

Now go have a Happy Birthday!!
