Mare has cast a front shoe - probably sucked off by the mud in the field, so she now has 3 shoes on. Not the first time this happened but I was wondering what surface/level of exercise you all feel you can safely do, in a similar situation, until Farrier visits?

I never ride a horse that has lost a front shoe....on some occasions I have done a small amount of exercise in a school if the horse has only lost a back shoe and is not foot sore...but preferably would wait until the farrier as the horse will be slightly unbalanced and can become more foot sore.

Glorious weekend last weekend, horse lost shoe on the Friday night <sigh> Blacksmith attends Wednesday, snow forecast all this weekend and its snowing heavily now.
I am not happy.

In answer to question - I didn't do anything - I would have considered it if it was a back shoe and I could have stuck to soft surfaces.

Whenever my horses lost shoes I did whatever work they were sound doing, including hacking and jumping. I never lamed one through doing it. In fact it's part of what made me believe that barefoot might be possible that so many different horses over the years had not minded losing a shoe.
