If a horse's shoes are worn down mainly at the toe (on both forefeet) what can this indicate? The horse is an 8 year old dutch warmblood who has recently gone lame and I am very worried as I have been told this breed are very prone to navicular and the average age for getting it is 8! The vet has recently been out but couldn't work out the cause of lameness though she did comment on his shoe wear and suggested I try him in a rolled toe/natural balance type shoe, do you think these would help? He is also slightly base wide and pigeon toed and he does tend to walk with a lot of impulsion (and has a long stride) could these cause the toe wear?

hum. ted is tb and used to wear the toes but hat was due to poor conformation (pigeon toed and base wide). Because of this, i put him in natural wear shoesx (natural balence without taking the toe right back.) a rolled or set two would help reduce the break over and reduce the wear. Does he scrap? this will wear the toe and also if he is not going forward it will scrap the toe.

I have never met a horse yet which doesnt where its toes out first! have a look at the wear of other horses on your yard, its probably not even related to his lameness if the wear is even on both shoes, im always very wary of vets suggestions unless there is concrete evidence. Give him a rest out in the field for a couple of weeks and see if he improves.
