Firstly, I'd like to say that this is for a friend - I'm working on the barefoot angle :D, but she's not ready to make the leap yet.

I don't know much about correcting pathologies with shoes on, however. The horse has flare and a bit of WLD. Can you grow out flare in shoes with just diet changes? I've given her plenty of hoof friendly feeding advice, but couldn't actually say if it would be enough to grow a well connected hoof wall with shoes still on?

Not sure about the WLD either... how do you treat it with a shoe on?

Ta!

If the owner wants to PM me I will try and help all I can, but I would love to know what the farrier is/has been doing about it.

Thanks, Heelfirst :)

The owner isn't on here, which is why I'm posting for her... I could lean on her to join though, if you'd be happier PMing her directly.

As far as I can see the farrier isn't doing a great deal - the usual rasping of the hoof wall, but that's it as far as I know. I suspect the flare is largely dietary, as the horse has been on quite sugary/starchy feeds until last week. I'm not sure I've ever seen flare grow out in a hoof that's still shod, though . But logically I imagine its possible...

It says much more about an owner if they are willing to ask direct.
I find helping through a third person no matter how good their intentions is never so effective
