My TB has really thin soles, flat feet and pretty weak horn. He's normally shod with heartbars, with thin nails that go quite high up to keep them on.
Normal farrier couldn't come out last week when the horse lost a shoe so had somebody else out who put on aluminium heartbars with 4 nails in the bottom bit of the foot and a bit of glue on top of the nails to make it more secure.
The feet look better than they ever have - problem is, the horse is lame on both front feet!
Now, to me it makes sense to use aluminium shoes as they are much lighter and it seems silly to put nails as high up the wall as possible as the 'good' bit of the wall is immediately broken up again.
Normal farrier has been back and said he would never shoe like that.
Obviously I'm not happy to use the other farrier again as no matter how good the feet look, the horse is lame!

Am just wondering what people's opinions are? Am I right in saying that the lighter shoes would be better? Or is there some reason for why they shouldn't be used?? (normal farrier didn't explain this to me)

Any opinions would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

Aluminium shoes wear out quickly, which means you might have to re-shoe more frequently making it counter productive long term.

Glue on shoes or even using hoof boots might be an option?

Might be worth asking your farrier about the glue on shoes. Dad (farrier) did a lot of work with Andrew Poynton when he was developing his and they are really good. I know a lot of farriers are using them now so your chap may well know of them already. If you want more info just google Imprint horseshoes.

aluminium shoes wear thin extremley quickly. if your tb is anything like mine then either his toes have been taken to far bruising them which is what happened to mine last week or the shoes are on to tight in which case the shoe will need to come off and be seated out to relieve pressure on the foot. my boys had his toes taken back to far on vet advice and he couldnt walk, he ended up having to have only 4 nails in so no nails in the front of the shoe to relieve pressure on the bruised toes, but now hes pulled it off completley and is now hopping!

yeah, think shoes are loaded too much, they're not supposed to be loaded at all.
Have asked about Imprint Shoes but they are mega expensive (!) and of course the horse has to stand very still for quite some time which my chap wouldn't do (we have tried to glue on shoes before and it was a no-go unfortunately...)
Tried Boa boots before but couldn't get a good fit.

Unfortunately normal farrier refused to touch these shoes which I'm really annoyed about as the horse is hopping lame and I really don't want the other guy who lamed him to come back in case he makes it worse!
Any ideas how to make the glue come off? I think getting these shoes off and then having him reshod properly is probably the best option now...

I know the imprint shoes are expensive but if you can afford to try them for a short time to give your horses hooves a chance to recover a bit it may well be worth ago.
Depending on what glue the farrier has used then acetone SHOULD remove it - it's what Dad uses to clean up previously glued feet anyway.

what area are you in, im sure someone can recomend you a farrier! i would call the farrier who did it and say you horse is lame and he is to come back out and sort it, if he wont speak to your vet, they will be able to take it off i would imagine then your own farrier can sort it out, more expensive i know but its a solution!
