Changed farrier about a year ago because our old farrier was always going off on a bender and letting everyone down.New farrier very reliable and does competitions and talks about supporting his foot etc.
Problem last shoeing 1st horse lost a shoe, put back on ,two days later lost other front shoe put back on ,cost £15 a time as they had been on just over two weeks.2nd horse shoes came loose at 4weeks and while at 4 day show had to pay to have them tightened.
This shoeing was 10 days ago, 1 st horse ok at moment.2nd horse lost one front shoe and twisted other in field last Thursday.Phoned farrier ,left message ,he never phoned back but called at 8.30pm to sort it out, horse turned out and would not be caught by farrier, we were out. So farrier could not get back to us until this morning [rode on arena for 15mins yesterday ,horse fine.]
He put shoes back on this morning, chatted about problem but he said he needs to leave metal sticking out to support foot. Went to box him up this afternoon for lesson with Nigel Taylor and thought he looked lame[never been lame in his life] and he is.The shoe is about 3/4 inch over frog at back and still has loads sticking out on other side.
He is an eventer and qualified for intro champ I'm tearing my hair out.Farrier said shoes may be a bit tight and he will come back tomorrow. I understand about supporting his foot as the sides are a bit vertical but how would leaving metal around the edge for him to tread on ,help this.
I just want a reliable farrier that fits shoes on that don't stick out. I pay top price but I am loosing confidence and my horses feet now look broken and sore, he says they are strong feet.and he hand makes his shoes. HELP

I sympathise from a diferent point of view, my horse has been shod 4 weeks and in the past 2 days the clenchs have risen and this moring the shoes were loose on the backs, so farrier very kindly fits me in because his feet are so rubbish we cant risk the shoe coming off, but now he has had to nail on quite high so I am worried about the feet cracking and breaking further up

hmm, even with "supporting" the foot he should feather the edges sp the horse cant get any purchase on it if he does stand on it. Also how long have you had the farrier? Occasinally if they are changing the shape slightly, the foot can get worse before it gets better...but he shouldnt be lame....difficult one!!

This weather is playing havock with shoes at the moment - mine are being shod every 3weeks otherwise their shoes just fall off! Rediculous! My little mare also has rather upright inner walls on her front feet and the farrier did the same thing of leaving the heel of the shoe slightly longer and broader to encourage the hoof to spread. When she started losing shoes alot he filed the heel into a slight slope (called a Hunting heel i think) so that it was harder for her to pull them off. Worked a treat and now am just having backshoes pulled off by the mud... oh joy!

This morninghe is still lame and I think it is because the shoe has been moved in ,so he doesn't tread on it, but not shortened so it is half way across his frog and heel. There is no heat so pretty sure its not the nails. Farrier is coming back tonight, he is such a nice lad and I know he is trying to improve his feet but not just before a championship, please[if we ever get any events]

Join the dark side and transition your horse to barefoot as soon as your competition season is over! No more ripped off shoes, lost wall etc and far more natural balance. But it doesn't work for every horse/owner combination as takes a lot of work during the transitioning period.

i know it's very very annoying BUT at least your farrier is trying and is poping out to replace shoes, i know it's not what you want you want to heard, but if horse is losing hoof he losing support, and then farrier got harder job to stop shoes being flipped

Then only thing i can extra i suggest is can you change any of your horsey management to help ??? does your need horse to wear bell boots front and back, or just whilst in feild, do you need horse not go out so much?? tape of muddy bits in field??, does your horse get stressed and knock top of nails???? in feild or box???
The more pressure you keep putting on feet and losing shoes the longer it will take to sort so you may have to look at your work programme as the old saying goes 'no foot' no horse'
i do feel sorry for you as i've been there with this kind of situtation
